Job description

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Joby is seeking a visionary Aircraft Maintenance Training Manager to architect and lead our maintenance training ecosystem. You will oversee the development and deployment of our maintenance training programs, ranging from general systems familiarization to our innovative Maintenance Apprenticeship program.

A unique highlight of this role includes leading a team of trainees in the hands-on assembly of Van’s RV-12 aircraft, providing a foundational "build-to-learn" experience. In close collaboration with the Maintenance Lead, you will define the training standards for our future fleet of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This is a rare opportunity to shape the next generation of aviation maintainers with emerging technology knowledge and new skills for a brand-new segment of the industry.

  • Design and oversee high-impact maintenance training programs tailored to Joby’s novel electric aircraft and propulsion systems.
  • Drive the growth of Joby Academy’s public-facing Light Sport Repairman Maintenance certification program, ensuring high student success rates and industry-leading instructional quality.
  • Guide the creation of engaging instructional materials to be delivered both online and in person.
  • Lead courseware developers, instructors, contractors, and/or other team members.
  • Conduct instructor-led training sessions for cohorts of trainees, utilizing a variety of instructional techniques to facilitate effective learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including subject matter experts, aircraft engineers, and maintenance technicians, to incorporate practical, hands-on experiences into training programs.
  • Instill a strong culture of safety and adherence to protocols in all training activities.
  • Strategic oversight, planning, development, and delivery of technical training programs to continuously meet the growing needs of the company aircraft maintenance organization.
  • Work as a maintenance technician on conventional and eVTOL aircraft as needed, using established maintenance procedures.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in aircraft maintenance, maintenance engineering, or a closely related aerospace technical field.
  • Experience developing technical training, providing classroom instruction, or mentoring junior technicians in a formal capacity..
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work daily in Marina and Watsonville California.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
  • Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.
  • Must be able to lift/push/pull a minimum of 50 pounds.

  • FAA Mechanic Certificate with an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) rating.
  • Formal academic education or skills training in instructional design, academic programs, or learning and development.
  • Experience with FAA-approved training programs for the certification of aircraft mechanics (14 CFR Parts 65 or 147).
  • Experience designing on-the-job training programs for aircraft mechanics in a commercial operation, MRO, or flight test environment.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) and/or other training software.
  • Experience leading maintenance technicians.
