What are train engineers?

Train engineers, also known as locomotive engineers, are professionals responsible for operating trains that transport passengers or freight. They control the speed, handling, and braking of the train, ensuring it runs safely and on schedule. Train engineers must be highly attentive, follow safety regulations, and be able to respond quickly to unexpected situations. Their work often involves collaborating with conductors and other rail workers to ensure smooth and safe train operations.

What are some common challenges Train Engineers face during daily operations, and how are they typically addressed?

Train Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing unexpected delays, adverse weather conditions, or mechanical issues with locomotives. To address these, they rely on clear communication with dispatchers and maintenance crews, adhere strictly to safety protocols, and follow established troubleshooting procedures. Ongoing training ensures engineers are prepared for emergencies and can make quick, informed decisions to maintain passenger safety and schedule reliability. Collaboration with other railroad staff is essential for resolving issues efficiently and minimizing disruptions.

What do you do as a train engineer?

A train engineer operates and controls trains, ensuring safe and efficient transportation of passengers or freight. They monitor signals, operate controls, and communicate with dispatchers, often working in a cab environment and requiring certification and adherence to safety protocols.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior train engineers or locomotive engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills, and certifications can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $300,000 annually, especially in high-demand regions or with overtime and bonuses. These roles often require advanced technical knowledge, safety training, and a strong understanding of railway operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Train Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Train Engineer, a solid understanding of railway operations, mechanical systems, and safety regulations is essential, typically supported by a high school diploma and completion of a railroad training program. Familiarity with train control systems, signaling technology, and certification from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are important soft skills for responding to unexpected situations and coordinating with crew members. These skills and qualifications are critical for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of trains, protecting passengers, cargo, and railway infrastructure.

Job description

Cox Automotive is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with deep DevOps expertise to operate at the Release Train level, partnering across approximately 14 engineering teams. You will work alongside fellow DevOps engineers to elevate the consistency, quality, and maturity of our engineering practices.
The right person for this role is as comfortable coaching and influencing as they are architecting solutions. You bring strong technical credibility, a bias toward standardization, and a genuine desire to help teams grow their own capabilities.
You'll champion the adoption of AI-powered tooling across the DevOps practice - from intelligent CI/CD pipelines and automated code review to AI-assisted incident response and infrastructure management. We're looking for someone curious about how AI can reduce toil, speed up delivery, and elevate the team's capabilities, not just someone who follows existing playbooks.
What You'll Do:
  • Partner with engineering teams across the Release Train to identify gaps in DevOps maturity and drive targeted improvements.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot cross functional production service issues.
  • Define and champion standards, patterns, and best practices for CI/CD, infrastructure, cloud, and containerization - making it easy for teams to do the right thing.
  • Act as a force multiplier: guide teams to implement solutions themselves rather than creating dependency on the DevOps function.
  • Collaborate with your DevOps peer to ensure consistent tooling, shared practices, and coordinated delivery across teams.
  • Identify systemic friction points across the Release Train and drive cross-team alignment to resolve them.
  • Contribute to roadmaps, standards documentation, and community of practice forums that scale DevOps knowledge organization-wide.
  • Evaluate and recommend tooling improvements that reduce toil and increase developer productivity.

Who You Are:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline and 4 years' experience in a related field; or a different combination, such as a master's degree and 2 years' experience; a Ph.D. and 1 years' experience in a related field; or 8 years' experience in a related field with no degree.
  • Proven ability to influence outcomes across multiple teams without direct authority - a natural coach and collaborator.
  • Deep experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines at scale (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or equivalent).
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS/GHE) and a solid understanding of cloud-native patterns.
  • Proficiency with container orchestration technologies, particularly Kubernetes.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or CDK.
  • Strong ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to engineers and non-engineers alike.
  • A systems thinker who looks for root causes and scalable solutions rather than one-off fixes.

Nice to have
  • Experience working within a SAFe or Agile Release Train structure.
  • Familiarity with developer experience (DevEx) principles and inner-loop optimization.
  • Background in platform or enabling team models (e.g. Team Topologies).
  • Experience building or contributing to internal developer platforms.
  • Core technologies
  • CI/CD (Jenkins / GitHub Actions) AWS Terraform CDK Docker Git

USD 101,500.00 - 169,100.00 per year
Compensation:
Compensation includes a base salary in the range of $101,500.00 - $169,100.00. The base salary may vary within the anticipated base pay range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include an incentive program.
Benefits:
The Company offers eligible employees the flexibility to take as much vacation with pay as they deem consistent with their duties, the company's needs, and its obligations; seven paid holidays throughout the calendar year; and up to 160 hours of paid wellness annually for their own wellness or that of family members. Employees are also eligible for additional paid time off in the form of bereavement leave, time off to vote, jury duty leave, volunteer time off, military leave, and parental leave.
EOE, including disability/vets
