What does a traffic engineer do?

A Traffic Engineer is a professional who designs, analyzes, and manages roadways, intersections, and traffic systems to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and vehicles. They use traffic modeling, data analysis, and engineering principles to solve congestion problems, enhance road safety, and plan future transportation infrastructure. Traffic Engineers often collaborate with urban planners, government agencies, and construction teams to implement solutions such as traffic signals, signage, and roadway improvements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a traffic engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Traffic Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering, traffic flow analysis, and transportation planning, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and licensure (such as a PE). Familiarity with traffic simulation software (e.g., Synchro, VISSIM), CAD tools, and knowledge of MUTCD standards are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help in collaborating with stakeholders and addressing complex transportation challenges. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing safe, efficient transportation systems that meet community needs and regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges traffic engineers face when working on urban infrastructure projects?

Traffic Engineers working on urban infrastructure projects often encounter challenges such as balancing the needs of various road users, addressing congestion in densely populated areas, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders including city planners, public transit authorities, and the community. They must also navigate evolving regulations and integrate new technologies like smart traffic signals. Effective communication and adaptability are crucial, as project priorities may shift based on public feedback or unforeseen construction issues.

What is the difference between Traffic Engineer vs Transportation Planner?

AspectTraffic EngineerTransportation Planner

Employer & Industry UsageMunicipalities, transportation agencies, consulting firmsUrban planning agencies, government departments, consulting firms

Traffic Engineers focus on designing and optimizing traffic systems and safety measures, while Transportation Planners develop broader transportation strategies and urban mobility plans. Both roles require related credentials and often collaborate on infrastructure projects, but their primary focus and scope differ.

How do I become a traffic engineer?

To become a traffic engineer, you typically need a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, transportation engineering, or a related field. Gaining experience through internships and obtaining a Professional Engineer (PE) license are important steps, along with developing skills in traffic analysis, planning, and using tools like traffic simulation software.

Job Description

A small, transportation-focused firm is seeking a Sr Traffic Engineer with 15–20 years of traffic study experience to lead and deliver traffic engineering projects for new developments. The role focuses on traffic studies and traffic analysis for mixed-use and multifamily developments, big-box retail projects, and select public sector work. You will work largely independently while supported by a CAD Technician and an EIT, manage existing client relationships, and help win new business. This position offers significant flexibility, remote work options, and the opportunity to shape project outcomes and client strategy within a nimble, repeat-client-driven organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation and delivery of traffic studies and traffic analysis for new development projects, including mixed-use, multifamily, big-box retail, and public sector developments.
  • Independently manage traffic engineering assignments from initial scoping through final deliverables, ensuring quality, accuracy, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Work directly with existing clients to understand project needs, provide technical guidance, and maintain strong, long-term relationships.
  • Support business development by helping to win additional work, including contributing to proposals, scopes, and client presentations.
  • Coordinate and oversee work performed by a CAD Technician and an EIT, providing direction, feedback, and technical guidance as needed.
  • Apply professional engineering judgment to roadway and highway design, safety planning, and safety project design where applicable.
  • Utilize design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and MicroStation to support traffic and roadway design tasks.
  • Collaborate with internal team members across different locations to ensure consistent standards, effective communication, and timely project delivery.
  • Maintain professional licensure requirements and stay current with evolving traffic engineering practices, standards, and regulations.
  • Contribute to a culture of flexibility, responsiveness, and high-quality service that supports a steady stream of repeat clients.

Essential Skills

  • 10–15 years of experience in traffic studies and traffic analysis, with a strong focus on traffic study preparation for new development projects.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license in civil engineering, with the ability to obtain or already hold a Washington (WA) PE license.
  • Extensive experience preparing traffic studies and traffic reports for mixed-use, multifamily, and retail developments.
  • Proven ability to work directly with clients, manage client expectations, and represent the firm in a professional manner.
  • Strong experience in traffic engineering principles, including roadway and highway design and traffic operations.
  • Proficiency with civil and transportation design software such as AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating effectively with a CAD Technician, EIT, and other team members.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to prepare clear reports and present technical findings.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • PTOE (Professional Traffic Operations Engineer) certification preferred.
  • Experience with MicroStation for roadway and traffic design tasks.
  • Experience in safety planning and safety project design is a plus.
  • Experience with roadway design, highway design, and general civil design.
  • Demonstrated success in winning additional work or contributing to business development efforts.
  • Comfort working in a smaller firm environment with a high level of responsibility and autonomy.

Work Environment

The firm operates as a smaller, flexible transportation practice with a strong base of repeat clients and a culture that values autonomy, responsiveness, and work–life balance. The role offers significant remote flexibility, with a preference for candidates located on the West Coast and openness to team members based in other states. You will collaborate with colleagues who may be remote, using modern design tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and MicroStation to support traffic and roadway design. The organization provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes a competitive compensation structure, participation in a performance-based bonus pool, a 401(k) plan with a 3% match, negotiable paid time off, separate sick time accrual, and 100% employer-covered benefits.
