Job description

STV currently has an opening in our North Carolina or South Carolina offices for a Traffic Design Engineer within our Transportation & Infrastructure division. You will serve as an integral component of the STV traffic engineering team and collaborate with staff across disciplines to deliver high-quality traffic engineering services. The position will focus on technical production-primarily traffic signal design and ITS design-while also supporting broader traffic design elements including signing, pavement marking, and work zone traffic control plans.
This role is ideal for a detail-oriented, self-motivated professional with strong technical expertise who enjoys hands-on design, problem-solving, and contributing to a collaborative and growing team. There is significant growth opportunity across multiple project types including highway and interchange design, roadway widenings, intersection improvements (including innovative intersections), and multimodal/bicycle/pedestrian improvements throughout STV's South Region.
Responsibilities include:
  • Developing high-quality traffic signal designs, including phasing, timing, detection, communication, and cabinet/controller plans
  • Preparing ITS designs, such as CCTV, DMS, fiber/communication layouts, detection systems, and related field devices
  • Supporting traffic engineering services such as signing and pavement marking design and work zone traffic control plans.
  • Coordinating with multidisciplinary design teams to ensure integrated, accurate deliverables within established schedules and budgets
  • Conducting field reviews, documenting existing conditions, and verifying design assumptions
  • Assisting project managers and senior engineers with development of specifications, quantities, cost estimates, technical reports, and final bid packages
  • Applying NCDOT, SCDOT, MUTCD, AASHTO, and local municipal standards consistently across all work products
  • Providing task-level QA/QC on design components and supporting quality reviews led by senior staff
  • Interfacing with clients, municipalities, and project managers as needed to support project delivery
  • Mentoring junior engineers and technicians by providing technical guidance and design best practices

Required Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering is required
  • 10+ years of traffic engineering or transportation design experience
  • Strong experience developing traffic signal designs is required
  • Experience with ITS infrastructure and communications design is preferred
  • NC or SC Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; ability to obtain licensure in the Carolinas is required
  • Experience working with NCDOT or SCDOT and local municipalities in the Carolinas is highly desired
  • Proficiency in MicroStation, AutoCAD, and applicable DOT CADD standards
  • Experience with ORD preferred
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to work independently while supporting a team environment
