A Day in the Life

As a Global Trade Operations Specialist, you will serve as a subject matter expert supporting Medtronic's global import compliance program by determining Country of Origin, assigning Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classifications, applying Rules of Origin, and maintaining the trade data required to support compliant importation of medical devices worldwide.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex trade compliance questions, analyzing manufacturing and supplier information, and making defensible compliance decisions that directly impact global operations. You'll partner with sourcing, engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and customs professionals to evaluate product changes, interpret international trade regulations, and ensure Medtronic products meet customs requirements across global markets.

Success in this role requires strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, sound judgment, and prior experience applying international trade regulations in a manufacturing or customs environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Determine and assign Country of Origin for new and existing products by evaluating Bills of Material, manufacturing processes, supplier information, and applicable Rules of Origin.
  • Research, assign, and maintain Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classifications while documenting classification rationale.
  • Evaluate manufacturing and sourcing changes to determine impact on Country of Origin, tariff classification, and import compliance.
  • Prepare and maintain origin certifications and supporting documentation required for customs compliance.
  • Partner with Engineering, Sourcing, Manufacturing, and Suppliers to obtain technical product information required to support origin and classification decisions.
  • Maintain trade compliance master data within ERP and trade systems while ensuring documentation is audit ready.
  • Research customs regulations and independently resolve moderately complex trade compliance questions.
  • Participate in internal and external audits by providing supporting documentation and explaining trade compliance determinations.
  • Recommend process improvements that improve efficiency, consistency, and regulatory compliance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree AND 1 year of experience in Global Trade Compliance, Import Compliance, Customs Brokerage, Customs Compliance, or International Trade Operations OR
  • High School Diploma/GED with 4+ years of directly related trade compliance experience.
  • Experience in one or more of the following:
    • Country of Origin determination
    • HTS Classification
    • Customs Brokerage
    • Rules of Origin
    • Import Compliance
    • Customs Entry
    • Trade Compliance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience determining Country of Origin for imported products.
  • Experience applying Customs Rules of Origin, including substantial transformation analysis.
  • Experience assigning or maintaining Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classifications.
  • Experience preparing or supporting Certificates of Origin or Free Trade Agreement documentation.
  • Experience interpreting Bills of Material, supplier information, manufacturing processes, and engineering documentation to support trade compliance decisions.
  • Experience working with U.S. Customs regulations and import compliance requirements.
  • Experience using ERP systems (SAP preferred) and trade compliance software.
  • Strong analytical and investigative problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written communication with the ability to clearly document trade compliance decisions.

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.
