What is a Torah teacher?

Torah Teachers are educators who specialize in teaching the Torah, the central text of Judaism, which includes the Five Books of Moses and related Jewish teachings. They may work in synagogues, Jewish day schools, or community centers, guiding students of all ages in understanding the religious, historical, and ethical aspects of the Torah. Torah Teachers often use a variety of teaching methods, including discussion, interpretation, and traditional study techniques, to help students connect with the text and its values. Their role is vital in preserving Jewish traditions and fostering a deeper spiritual and cultural understanding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Torah teacher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Torah Teacher, you need a deep understanding of Jewish texts, strong pedagogical skills, and formal education in Judaic studies or rabbinical training. Familiarity with educational technology, digital resources for Torah learning, and classroom management tools is often beneficial. Exceptional communication, patience, and the ability to inspire and engage students are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure effective transmission of traditions, foster meaningful learning experiences, and support the spiritual and intellectual growth of students.

How do Torah teachers typically collaborate with other educators and staff within a school or community setting?

Torah Teachers often work closely with other faculty members, such as Judaic studies teachers, general studies teachers, and school administrators, to create a cohesive educational experience for students. Collaboration may include developing interdisciplinary projects, aligning curriculum goals, and participating in faculty meetings to discuss student progress and school-wide initiatives. Additionally, Torah Teachers may coordinate with counselors or youth directors to support students' spiritual and academic growth. This teamwork helps foster a supportive learning environment rooted in shared values.

Job description

Torah Academy is more than a school. We are a community built around joyous, authentic Yiddishkeit and genuine care for every child. We are a community where every family is valued and where student successes are recognized and celebrated by everyone. At Torah Academy, education is about more than just academics. It’s also about fostering Jewish pride, love for learning, and sensitivity to others. And mostly it’s about our students knowing that they, as individuals, matter.
We are currently seeking dedicated, creative, and warm elementary general studies teachers for our boys division. This role is ideal for a current graduate student in education, someone interested in exploring becoming a teacher, or a recently retired teacher who isn’t quite ready to leave it all behind!
Responsibilities include
Create a warm, caring, and safe environment  Students are at the heart of what we do. When they know that they are cared for, students come ready to learn. This includes building nurturing relationships with students and providing age-appropriate levels of student supervision, classroom rules, and routines.
Create and implement lesson plans  You will be responsible for teaching all general studies content areas, including ELA, History, Math, and Science. Our curriculum is aligned with Massachusetts state standards. Your creativity will shine in the activities you plan to engage student interest in the content. You will be teaching an upper elementary grade (3, 4, or 5).
Monitor and communicate student progress  Provide feedback to students and their families on academic, social, and behavioral progress. Maintain appropriate records. Create two-way communication channels with families so they are updated on their child’s progress.
Other responsibilities  As assigned by the Head of School.
What we’re looking for in you

  • You have prior successful experience with elementary students.
  • You have a strong commitment to practicing differentiated instruction.
  • You are passionate about educating children.
  • You are creative and think outside the box when it comes to challenging young minds.

About Torah Academy

Torah Academy is a preK-8 school that has been in the Boston area for 40 years. We foster a supportive professional environment, including extensive professional development, growth, and advancement opportunities. Our students spend the mornings studying and celebrating Kodesh, including Hebrew, Torah, and Jewish laws and customs. In the afternoons students engage in general studies according to their grade level. Because of the intense nature of the morning curriculum our students are pretty sophisticated in their thinking. We are seeking general studies teachers to match that level of rigor in their content areas. Our general studies curriculum is modeled after the public school frameworks, so familiarity with grade level secular academic expectations is a big plus. Torah Academy contains a boys division and a girls division; students are separated by gender starting in first grade.
