What is topology optimization?

A Topology Optimization job involves using computational design methods to create efficient and lightweight structures by optimizing material distribution within a given design space. Professionals in this field use algorithms, simulations, and software tools like ANSYS, Abaqus, or Altair OptiStruct to enhance product performance while reducing weight and material usage. These roles are common in aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing industries, where optimized designs can improve efficiency and sustainability. Candidates typically have expertise in structural mechanics, finite element analysis (FEA), and computer-aided design (CAD).

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in topology optimization?

Professionals in topology optimization typically spend their days developing and refining computational models, running simulations to improve structural efficiency, and analyzing results to inform design decisions. They frequently collaborate with product designers, manufacturing engineers, and other specialists to ensure optimized designs are practical and meet project requirements. Routine tasks can also include preparing technical reports, presenting findings to stakeholders, and integrating optimization results into the broader engineering workflow. This dynamic role requires a blend of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in topology optimization, and why are they important?

To thrive in Topology Optimization, a strong background in mechanical or structural engineering, mathematical modeling, and computational methods is typically required, often supported by an advanced degree. Familiarity with specialized software such as ANSYS, Abaqus, SolidWorks, and optimization tools like MATLAB or Altair OptiStruct is essential. Analytical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams are key soft skills for this role. These competencies enable professionals to create innovative, efficient designs that meet complex engineering requirements while effectively integrating feedback from various stakeholders.

Job description

Space is a warfighting domain. True Anomaly seeks those with the talent and ambition to build the technology that secures it. OUR MISSION True Anomaly delivers decisive capabilities for space superiority. We build autonomous spacecraft, advanced payloads, mission software, and space-based interceptors - enabling the U.S. and its Allies to secure the space environment and counter threats from the ultimate high ground. OUR VALUES * Be the offset. We create asymmetric advantages with creativity and ingenuity. * What would it take? We challenge assumptions to deliver ambitious results. * It's the people. Our team is our competitive advantage and we are better together. YOUR MISSION True Anomaly is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Senior Avionics Electronics Enclosure Engineer to join our Mechanical and Structures organization, fully dedicated to supporting the Avionics Components and Payloads teams. In this role, you will own the mechanical design of avionics electronics enclosures from concept through qualification - engineering housings, brackets, and structural assemblies that protect and integrate our flight electronics while relentlessly driving down mass, managing thermal performance, and surviving the rigors of launch and on-orbit operation. You bring deep expertise in precision mechanical design for space hardware, fluency in structural and thermal analysis, and a hands-on prototyping mindset that lets you iterate quickly from concept to hardware. RESPONSIBILITIES * Own the mechanical design and development of avionics electronics enclosures, housings, brackets, and structural assemblies for spacecraft avionics and electrical payload systems * Drive mass optimization throughout the design process, applying topology optimization, advanced materials selection, and design-for-manufacture principles to minimize enclosure mass without sacrificing structural margin * Collaborate closely with avionics, EPS, and payload electrical engineers to ensure enclosure designs meet all PCB mounting, connector access, harness routing, and thermal interface requirements * Apply and enforce tight geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) practices to ensure precise fit, alignment, and repeatability across electronics enclosure assemblies * Produce and iterate rapid 3D printed prototypes to validate fit, form, and function ahead of formal fabrication * Create or support the creation of engineering drawings, BOMs, and fabrication documentation to support manufacturing and procurement * Perform or support thermal analysis of electronics enclosures, including conductive and radiative thermal modeling, which ensures component temperatures remain within qualification limits across all mission environments * Perform or support structural dynamics modeling of enclosure assemblies including modal, random vibration, and shock analysis that verifies compliance with launch environment requirements * Support integration and test activities, including environmental test campaigns, and assist in troubleshooting mechanical integration issues * Develop and maintain design documentation including specifications, analysis reports, and test plans QUALIFICATIONS * Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field * 5+ years of professional experience in precision mechanical design for aerospace, defense, or high-reliability electronics applications * Demonstrated expertise in electronics enclosure or chassis design, including structural, thermal, and mass optimization considerations * Proficiency in 3D CAD tools (NX or SolidWorks preferred) and experience generating detailed engineering drawings with GD&T * Experience with structural dynamics analysis including modal, random vibration, and shock response, using FEA tools (NASTRAN, ANSYS, or equivalent) * Experience with thermal analysis of electronics enclosures, including conductive and radiative heat transfer modeling * Hands-on experience with 3D printing technologies for rapid prototyping and design iteration * Excellent written and verbal communication skills PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE * Experience designing enclosures for space-qualified electronics, including material selection for vacuum, thermal cycling, and radiation environments * Familiarity with topology optimization tools and additive manufacturing design principles for mass reduction * Experience with advanced materials including aluminum alloys, titanium, carbon fiber composites, and thermal interface materials for spacecraft applications * Familiarity with EMI/EMC shielding considerations in electronics enclosure design * Knowledge of applicable aerospace standards (GSFC-STD-7000, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461) * Experience working in a fast-paced, startup environment or a similarly dynamic setting COMPENSATION * Base Salary: $140,000-$200,000 * Equity + Benefits including Health, Dental, Vision, HRA/HSA options, PTO and paid holidays, 401K, Parental Leave Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, location, and experience. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS * Work Location-Successful candidates will be located near Long Beach, CA or Denver, CO. While we observe a hybrid work environment, some work must be done on site. * Work environment-the work environment; temperature, noise level, inside or outside, or other factors that will affect the person's working conditions while performing the job. * Physical demands-the physical demands of the job, including bending, sitting, lifting and driving.
