Job Description

The Tooling Design Engineer is responsible for the design and development of industrial tools, dies, gauges, drill and assembly jigs, fixtures, machine attachments, and support equipment used in production and experimental environments. This role collaborates closely with manufacturing, operations, vendors, and engineering teams to ensure tooling solutions meet quality, safety, cost, and schedule requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop tooling concepts and support equipment for new and existing programs

  • Design tooling and equipment including engineering drawings, inspection requirements, and verification plans

  • Collaborate with Tool Designers to create and finalize detailed drawings

  • Review tooling designs for manufacturability, fit, form, and function

  • Manage tooling projects including cost, procurement, fabrication, and schedule activities

  • Coordinate with internal customers and design review teams to ensure tooling requirements are achieved

  • Support vendors during tooling fabrication and inspect completed tooling for drawing compliance

  • Partner with manufacturing, operations, and process engineering teams to support quality, delivery, and cost objectives

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and proactive problem-solving efforts

  • Design safe and efficient tooling layouts and manufacturing processes

  • Identify and mitigate safety risks in compliance with company and regulatory standards

  • Support root cause investigations, non-conformance analysis, and process improvement activities

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

  • Experience using NX CAD, CATIA, or similar industry-standard design tools

  • Knowledge of manufacturing, fabrication processes, and machine shop practices

  • Experience with drawing release requirements including dimensional accuracy, material/process compliance, GD&T standards, and fabrication practicality

  • Knowledge and application of GD&T (ASME Y14.5-2018)

  • Knowledge of drawing weld symbols and drafting standards

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong organizational and project management skills

  • High attention to technical detail

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline

  • U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance and special program access

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

  • Experience in aerospace manufacturing environments

  • Experience designing and fabricating special tooling and support equipment

  • Ability to evaluate vendor capabilities for tooling and aerospace production

  • Experience supporting tooling Statements of Work (SOW) and design estimates

  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems

  • Experience with stress analysis and finite element analysis (FEA)

  • Professional Engineering (PE) License

  • Active DoD Secret Clearance within the last 5 years preferred
