Job Summary
Manage inventory levels of perishable and non-perishable tooling such as gloves, drills, mills, hobs, nut bolts, etc. Track usage levels and suggest improvements to the system for usage reduction and cost savings. Maintain databases for tracking tool usage, receive orders, and address discrepancies in orders to insure order and inventory accuracy. Sharpen tooling such as hobs and shaping cutters as well as coordinate with suppliers for managing pickup and delivery of tooling for refurbishment.
Essential Functions:
- Tooling Inventory by:
- Understanding and maintaining items in the tool crib inventory system.
- Identify and recommend items that should be managed automatically by tool crib management software.
- Place order requests for items not managed by tool crib management software.
- Tool sharpening by:
- Maintain and improve upon tracking method of refurbished tooling.
- Refurbish/sharpen tooling that is within our refurbishment/sharpening capability
- Send out items for refurbishment that are outside of our refurbishment/sharpening capability.
- Monitor tool wear, damage and remaining life and maintain documentation through the life of the tool.
- Notify engineering when tooling levels are low and need replenished
- Assigning damaged tool statements to supervisors when tools are received and are damaged.
- Shop supplies by:
- Ordering and issuing shop supplies (gloves, shop towels, etc.)
- Maintaining inventory of shop supplies.
- Issue purchase order requests for refurbished tools to be sent out. (Hobs, shaper cutters, broaches, drills, etc.)
- Track tools being sent out and received back from refurbishment
- Receive, log and put away tooling in appropriate system.
- Receive and compile the days receiving paperwork and submit for receipt of orders.
- Maintaining records of blanket orders.
- Maintaining records of scrap tooling.
- Driving company vehicles as needed to pick up local orders for urgent needs
- Responsible for supporting the Schafer Business Process by:
- Maintaining the 6S program in tool crib for a clean and organized area.
- Report issues to engineering and technical leads when trends in short tool life and damaged tools are noticed.
- Develop and maintain/update work instructions pertaining to the functions of the job.
- Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the company by:
- Channeling problems and/or complaints to appropriate person for resolution.
- Supporting all Schafer policies and procedures.
- Performing other non-job-related duties as required.
- Reporting to Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed.
- Providing input and assistance with the implementation of quality improvements.
- Resolve problems.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 30 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time on cement or other hard surfaces, etc.
- Demonstrates the verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms and take messages in a legible, accurate manner.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Two plus years of manufacturing experience.
- Must be able to communicate in English.
- Ability to use a computer
- Valid driver's license
Working Conditions:
- Air conditioned/heated manufacturing facility with possible exposure to noise; dust; fumes; physical, chemical, and biohazards; solvents, oils, and detergents.
- This job is to be performed at the designated facility 100% of the time unless directed otherwise by manager/supervisor.
