Job description

The Title Underwriter position is full-time and is based in one of our Virginia office locations.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Prepare title commitments upon the examination of title evidence & ensure commitments are prepared in accordance with the established underwriter guidelines.
  • Utilize escrow & title software to generate title commitments while also identifying and clearing title issues that may be too complex for automated systems to interpret and handle.
  • Assist Underwriting Manager with the oversight of underwriting processes and ensure that policies and procedures align with company goals.
  • Evaluate insurance applications, analyze risks, and decide on issuing policies and setting premiums.
  • Respond to customer inquiries requesting status, rate quotes, title defects, clearing exceptions or general information.
  • Assist with training and guidance to underwriting staff
  • Analyze and provide guidance on real estate taxes as they relate to individual lots, new condominium units, large tracts of land/assemblages, etc.
  • Ensure that department goals are met withing provided timelines.
  • Ensure that title & lender requirements have been satisfied.
  • Work closely with other departments to maintain customer satisfaction and adhere to regulatory compliance.
  • Stay up to date with changes in underwriting regulations, trends, and best practices.
  • Support underwriting team as needed.

Position Standards:

  • Demonstrate ownership and direct accountability.
  • Resolve discrepancies expeditiously.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and deliver on deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Possess strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Adhere to company safety standards and help promote a safe working environment
  • Proficiency with Outlook and possess the ability to create Excel spreadsheets. Position requires knowledge of basic computer systems; demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word & Excel).
  • Requires demonstrated skill in data entry. Daily use of Qualia.

Position Requirements:

  • 8+ years of title underwriting experience.
  • 1+ years of management & leadership experience.
  • Licensed Title Producer โ€“ VA, MD or DC (required); (NC, a plus).
  • Certification as a notary public โ€“ VA, MD or DC (required).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate both internally and externally to solidify business partnerships and a positive work environment.
  • Must have experience in the following jurisdictions: Virginia and/or Maryland.
  • Knowledge of real estate guidelines, ALTA Best Practices & RESA regulations.
  • Valid driver's license.
