Job description

THE JOB

Tidewater Environmental Services, Inc. is hiring a Diesel Mechanic II to diagnose and perform preventative and corrective mechanical maintenance and repair on all equipment, including diesel trucks, Vac-Con trucks, drop boxes and high-pressure/high-volume wash pumps.

  • Inspects air brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, etc. to ensure they are in proper operating condition.
  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots and repairs electrical, hydraulic and compressed air systems.
  • Performs welding and/or fabrication repairs as needed on equipment.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
  • Identifies warrantable repairs and documents on repair orders.
  • Utilizes truck diagnostic technology to diagnose equipment failures.
  • Performs road testing on vehicles to diagnose malfunctions and/or ensure equipment is working properly.

THE CATCH

  • The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of five years' experience as a diesel mechanic working with truck fleets, brake systems, electrical systems, hydraulics, and compressed air systems, and a demonstrated proficiency in welding and/or fabrication repairs. A combination of relevant training, education and experience may be substituted for the work experience requirement.

  • Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with Tanker endorsement, Class A CDL preferred.

  • Vocational/Technical Certification preferred.

  • Completion of OSHA 24-hour HAZWOPER training.

  • Ability to be certified in First Aid/CPR.

  • Must be available on an on-call basis on nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Card from the Department of Homeland Security.

  • Required Skills:

    • Ability to read, write, verbalize and comprehend instructions and correspondence in the English language.

    • This position is performed mainly in a shop environment. Work may be performed offsite, as job duties require. May be exposed to loud operating machinery, inclement weather conditions, working around water, slip/fall hazards, electrical and mechanical hazards, foreign body hazards, chemicals, vapors and dust and fumes.

    • Pulls, pushes and/or lifts a variety of equipment and parts requiring force up to 100 pounds on occasion. Must be able to stoop, kneel and twist frequently while performing job duties. Lifting may occur in awkward positions while working in cramped quarters. Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces and around obstacles.

  • All employment offers are contingent on the successful completion of a drug screen, driving record, and criminal background check.
