What are theater interns?

Theater interns are individuals, often students or recent graduates, who work temporarily with theater companies or organizations to gain practical experience in various aspects of theater production. Their responsibilities can range from assisting with stage management, costumes, lighting, and sound to helping with administrative tasks or even performing in productions. Internships are typically designed to provide hands-on learning opportunities and networking within the theater industry. They are a valuable way to build skills, gain industry insight, and make professional connections. Most theater internships are unpaid or offer a small stipend, but the experience can be crucial for launching a theater career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Theater Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Theater Intern, you generally need a foundational understanding of theater production, stage management, or performance, often gained through coursework or participation in school or community theater. Familiarity with technical tools such as lighting and sound boards, basic costume and set design, and scheduling or communication platforms like Google Workspace is valuable. Strong collaboration, adaptability, and effective communication skills help you work seamlessly with diverse cast and crew members. These skills and qualities are essential for successfully supporting productions, learning from professionals, and contributing to a dynamic theater environment.

What is the difference between Theater Intern vs Theater Technician?

AspectTheater InternTheater Technician
Required CredentialsUsually enrolled in or recent graduate of theater, arts, or related programsTechnical certifications or experience in lighting, sound, or stage equipment
Work EnvironmentAssist with various production tasks, observe rehearsals, support staffOperate technical equipment, set up stage, troubleshoot technical issues
Employer & Industry UsageFound in theaters, production companies, arts organizationsCommon in theaters, live event venues, production companies

While both roles are involved in theater productions, a Theater Intern typically gains experience by assisting and observing, often as part of an educational program. A Theater Technician is responsible for technical aspects like lighting and sound, requiring specific skills and certifications. Interns focus on learning and supporting, whereas technicians handle technical operations during performances.

What types of tasks and learning opportunities can a Theater Intern expect during their internship?

As a Theater Intern, you can expect a variety of hands-on tasks, such as assisting with backstage production, supporting rehearsals, helping with set construction, managing props and costumes, and even participating in marketing or administrative activities. Interns often rotate through different departments, providing exposure to both the creative and operational sides of a theater production. This role is highly collaborative, allowing you to work closely with directors, stage managers, designers, and performers. Many theater internships also offer mentorship and networking opportunities, which can be valuable for building a career in the performing arts.
