SUMMER JOB OPENING

Music/Theatre Camp Counselor - Cultural Arts Camps


We are seeking a camp counselor to lead the music activities in our theatre camp. If you have experience and a love of teaching music vocals to youth campers, this is a great opportunity for you to help kids discover their creativity, develop confidence, and have fun through acting, singing, and performing. Build leadership skills, collaborate with friends, and enjoy weekends off while making a lasting impact in a child's life!


JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction and supervision of the Manager of Cultural Arts & Camps and the Cultural Arts Camp Leader, the Music/Theatre Camp Counselor will lead music/vocals activities with youth campers and assist with planning, preparing, and participating in camp activities. Music experience required and piano playing ability preferred.

Camp hours will vary from 8:30am until 4:30pm, depending on the camp. These camp positions run for 4 weeks, in addition to training days scheduled prior to the start of camp. Cultural Arts Camp Counselors will work with children ranging in age from 6-15 years, in groups of 5-20 campers. Activities include but are not limited to; improv games, completing crafts, learning music, reading scripts, reading monologues, other theatre games, and much more. Counselors are expected to interact with campers throughout their entire shift, lead and/or assist with activities, be a team-player, and ensure campers are always safe. Additional duties include behavior management, set-up/clean-up of the camp location, craft/activity prep and other duties as assigned. This is an at-will position.

CAMP DATES

3,2,1, Action! Camp: June 9th - June 26th, M-F, from 1-4pm

"Yes, And" Improv Camp: June 9th - June 12th, T-F, from 9am-12pm

Art of Acting Camp: June 22nd - June 26th, M-F, from 9am-12pm

Mini Musical Mashup Camp: July 6th - July 10th, M-F, from 9am-12pm

Broadway Bound Cabaret Camp: July 6th - July 10th, M-F, from 1-4pm


ORIENTATION DATES: Starting in early June with details to follow.

HOURS: Monday - Friday availability between 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

LOCATION: Spring Ave. Rec. Center, 185 Spring Ave., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137


PLEASE NOTE: Expectation is that you will be available for the entire 4-week program.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stand, move, and actively engage with campers for extended periods of time.
  • Comfortable performing and demonstrating theatrical movements, including basic acting, dancing, and singing techniques.
  • Capable of setting up and taking down stage props, costumes, and equipment, including lifting items up to 25 pounds.
  • Comfortable participating in group activities, games, and movement-based exercises.
  • Strong voice and listening skills with the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds.
  • Must have adequate sight to observe participants and identify potential hazards.
  • Ability to assist children with costume changes, prop adjustments, and other physical needs.
  • Comfortable navigating stairs or elevated platforms if required for stage settings.
  • Able to respond quickly and calmly in case of emergencies or safety concerns.


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING

  • Candidates must be 18 or older. High School graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will be outgoing, reliable, self-motivated, and creative with a strong interest in working with children.
  • Previous experience with teaching music and theater.
  • Prior experience working with children of multiple ages is recommended.
  • Previous camp experience is a plus.
  • Preference given to candidates working towards a degree in art, theatre, education, recreation, or similar field.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with participants, their parents, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain discretion regarding confidential matters and/or information.
  • Proficient in MS Outlook or other email system for communication with the aptitude to learn and use other applications.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certified, or willing to become certified within 30 days of hire. (We will provide)
  • Reliable transportation to and from work is required.
