As of Jul 5, 2026, the average yearly pay for the historian in the United States is $86,335.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $66,500.00 and $105,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Are historians paid well?

Historians' salaries vary based on experience, education, and employment sector, with median annual wages around $63,000 according to recent data. Academic and research roles tend to pay less than positions in museums, government, or private consulting, which may offer higher compensation. Skills in research, critical thinking, and familiarity with archival tools are essential for these roles.

Is there a high demand for historians?

The demand for historians is generally moderate, with employment opportunities primarily in education, museums, archives, and research institutions. Job growth is expected to be steady but limited, and strong research, writing, and analytical skills are important for success in the field.
