Job Description:

A well-established Virginia law firm is seeking an Insurance Defense Litigation Associate with 2–4 years of experience to join its Roanoke office. This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney looking to further develop their litigation experience while representing insurers, businesses, and other clients in a sophisticated defense practice.

The ideal candidate will have experience handling insurance defense, workers' compensation defense, property insurance defense, or related civil litigation matters and be comfortable managing cases through various stages of litigation.



Responsibilities:

  • Represent insurance carriers, businesses, and other clients in civil litigation and insurance defense matters.
  • Handle matters involving general insurance defense, workers' compensation, property insurance claims, and related litigation.
  • Manage cases through discovery, motions practice, settlement negotiations, and trial preparation.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery requests and responses, and other litigation documents.
  • Take and defend depositions of parties, witnesses, and experts.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare case evaluations and litigation strategies.
  • Attend hearings, mediations, depositions, and court proceedings.
  • Communicate with clients and insurance carriers regarding case strategy, exposure, and resolution.
  • Negotiate settlements and participate in alternative dispute resolution.
  • Manage deadlines, case files, and client reporting requirements.
  • Meet the firm's 1,850 annual billable-hour requirement.


Qualifications/Requirements:

  • 2–4 years of civil litigation experience, preferably involving insurance defense.
  • Experience in insurance defense, workers' compensation defense, property insurance defense, general liability, or personal injury defense.
  • Experience drafting pleadings, motions, discovery, and substantive legal correspondence.
  • Deposition experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to independently manage an active litigation caseload while collaborating with partners and other attorneys.
  • Strong communication and client-service skills.
  • Active Virginia Bar license required.
  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
