As a Faulkner, sourcing high-quality materials—especially specific types of wood or leather—can be challenging due to fluctuating supply, costs, and the need to meet clients' expectations for craftsmanship. You may work closely with suppliers and need a good understanding of material grades, sustainability considerations, and current trends in furniture design. Developing strong relationships with trusted vendors and staying up-to-date on material availability are key strategies. Overcoming these challenges ensures the finished pieces reflect the high standards associated with handcrafted furniture.

What is a faulkner?

Faulkners are skilled tradespeople who traditionally specialized in working with animal skins, particularly making and repairing items such as cloaks, pelts, and sometimes leather goods. The term is quite archaic and is rarely used today, but historically, Faulkners played an essential role in preparing and crafting furs for clothing and other uses. Their work required knowledge of skin treatment, sewing, and sometimes dyeing techniques. While the profession has largely disappeared or been absorbed into broader leatherworking and tailoring trades, some historical reenactment groups and heritage craftspeople may still use the title.
