Testing Intern information

What is a testing intern?

Testing Interns are entry-level professionals, often students or recent graduates, who assist in software or product testing within a company. Their primary responsibilities include executing test cases, reporting bugs, and documenting results to ensure that software or products meet quality standards. Testing Interns work closely with QA teams and developers, gaining hands-on experience in various testing methodologies, tools, and best practices. This role helps them develop technical skills and an understanding of the software development lifecycle.

What are the typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for a testing intern?

As a Testing Intern, you'll typically assist in executing test cases, documenting defects, and collaborating with developers and senior testers to ensure software quality. You'll gain hands-on experience with various testing tools, learn about test planning, and understand the software development lifecycle. This role offers a valuable chance to develop analytical and problem-solving skills while contributing to real-world projects, and you'll often participate in team meetings and code reviews to deepen your understanding of quality assurance practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a testing intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Testing Intern, you need a foundational understanding of software testing principles, basic programming knowledge, and attention to detail, typically supported by coursework in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with testing tools such as Selenium, JUnit, or Bugzilla and version control systems like Git is often expected. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and a willingness to learn help Testing Interns excel in team environments and adapt to new challenges. These skills and qualities ensure accurate defect identification, efficient collaboration, and valuable contributions to software quality.

Job description

Position Summary
Vertiv is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Test Engineering Intern to join the Product Integrity organization within the Power Management business unit at our Delaware, Ohio facility.

This internship provides hands-on exposure to electrical equipment testing, test instrumentation, data collection, documentation, troubleshooting support, safety practices, and continuous improvement in a high-power engineering lab environment.
The Product Integrity team supports validation activities that include planning, test case development, test execution, compliance, and data collection, with outputs such as test cases, schedules, results, conformance evidence, and compliance documentation. This internship is designed as a learning role: the intern will support engineers and technicians with supervised lab activities, documentation, data organization, and an assigned summer project, while developing practical skills in product validation and engineering test operations.

Responsibilities
The Test Engineering Intern will work under the direction of Test Engineers, Test Technicians, and lab leadership.

Responsibilities may include:
Support test setup activities by helping prepare units under test, test fixtures, cables, labels, sensors, wiring 480V setups before energization, and documentation under supervision.
Assist with instrumentation setup using tools such as oscilloscopes, power meters, current transformers, voltage probes, temperature loggers, data acquisition equipment, and other lab equipment, as training and authorization allow. The Delaware Product Integrity operating system lists equipment such as Yokogawa oscilloscopes, differential probes, power meters, AC/DC current transformers, temperature loggers, data loggers, and related test equipment as part of the test environment.

Support execution of documented test cases by observing test steps, collecting measurements, recording results, organizing files, and escalating issues to the responsible engineer or technician.
Document test results and engineering observations

Assist with data quality and analysis, including organizing raw data, checking completeness, preparing plots/tables, and helping translate lab data into clear engineering summaries.
Help troubleshoot test setups and units under test by supporting engineers and technicians with data review, wiring checks, instrumentation checks, and repeatability checks.
Support continuous improvement projects such as improving test documentation, creating templates, developing simple dashboards, organizing lab data, improving fixture usability, or applying approved automation/data-analysis tools.
Participate in 5S and safety practices and complete required safety/lab access training before entering or working in Delaware test bays and labs. Delaware lab access guidance states that access requires a need to enter the area and completion of training based on access level.

Minimum Qualifications
Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Computer

Engineering, Data Science, Physics, or a related technical field.
Interest in electrical equipment testing, power systems, product validation, instrumentation, data analysis, or engineering lab operations.

Ability and willingness to learn in a hands-on, fast-paced engineering lab environment and produce high-quality work. This wording aligns with Vertiv internship postings that commonly call for willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment, strong work ethic, attention to detail, analytical thinking, communication, collaboration, and teamwork.

Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word; ability to document work clearly and professionally.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated attention to detail, curiosity, and commitment to safe work practices.

Ability to work onsite at the Delaware, Ohio facility for the Summer 2027 internship period.

Ability to complete required Vertiv onboarding, safety, and lab access training before performing lab activities. Delaware badge guidance identifies training requirements by access level, including Safety Orientation for Test Bays and Labs and additional electrical safety courses for higher access levels.
Ability to stand and/or walk while supporting lab activities and to safely handle test equipment, tools, or cables as required, with appropriate training and assistance.

Learning Opportunities

During the internship, the Test Engineering Intern can expect exposure to:

Product Integrity and design validation testing: understanding how requirements, test cases, test sets, and test results connect in the validation process.

High-power lab operations: gaining supervised exposure to the Delaware lab environment, test bays, instrumentation, safety expectations, and 5S practices.
