What does a test proctor do?

A Test Proctor is responsible for overseeing exams to ensure they are conducted fairly and securely. Their duties include verifying the identity of test-takers, explaining exam rules, distributing and collecting test materials, and monitoring the testing environment for any irregularities or cheating. Test Proctors may work in schools, universities, or professional certification centers, and they play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the examination process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test proctor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Proctor, attention to detail, organizational skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent are essential qualifications. Familiarity with test administration software, secure browser systems, and ID verification tools is typically required. Strong communication, impartiality, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are important soft skills that help maintain a fair testing environment. These skills and qualities ensure exam integrity, regulatory compliance, and a smooth experience for test-takers.

What are the main challenges a test proctor might face during exam administration?

Test Proctors often encounter challenges such as maintaining exam integrity while managing large groups, addressing unexpected technical issues with testing equipment, and handling candidates' questions or concerns professionally without compromising fairness. Balancing attentiveness to potential academic dishonesty with providing a calm test environment is crucial. Proctors must also be adaptable, as exam formats and protocols can vary between organizations and testing sessions.

What is the difference between Test Proctor vs Test Administrator?

The roles often overlap, but the Proctor focuses on supervision, and the Administrator manages the overall testing process.

How do you become a test proctor?

To become a test proctor, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and may be required to pass a background check. Some employers prefer prior experience in testing environments or customer service, and training is often provided on test security and procedures. Certification is not usually mandatory but can enhance job prospects.

Job description

OTSI (Object Technology Solutions, Inc) has an immediate opening for a Test Technician 2 Test Technician 2 (onsite Role) MAJOR RESPONSIBILITES: looking for a Lab Technician to support SSD hardware bring-up, firmware validation readiness, and lab operations within the US FPT lab team. In this role, you will help enable successful SSD validation programs by ensuring test systems are properly configured, hardware is available and tracked, issues are resolved quickly, and lab activities stay aligned with project schedules. This is a hands-on technical role in a fast-paced engineering lab environment.

You will work closely with firmware, validation, platform, facilities, IT/infrastructure, and operations teams to support new hardware bring-up, test execution, system debug, inventory management, and continuous improvement of lab processes. This role requires onsite lab support and direct interaction with SSD hardware, test systems, lab inventory, and shipping/receiving activities. Remote or hybrid work is not supported for this role due to the nature of lab operations and hardware readiness requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE Hands-on experience building, configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining PC/server-based hardware systems. Experience with NVMe/PCIe SSD hardware, storage platforms, or system-level test environments. Ability to execute test plans, follow written procedures, and summarize results accurately.

Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, software, firmware, connectivity, and system setup issues. Familiarity with Unix/Linux command-line environments. Basic scripting experience in Shell or Python is preferred.

Proficiency with Microsoft Excel for inventory tracking, reporting, and data organization. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently using technical documentation and defined procedures.

Comfortable performing hands-on, repetitive, detail-oriented lab activities with consistency and quality. Prior experience in an SSD, storage, firmware validation, hardware validation, or engineering lab environment is strongly preferred. Experience with automation, diagnostic tools, log collection, or analyzer tools is a plus.

The ideal candidate enjoys solving technical problems, working directly with hardware, documenting results clearly, and contributing to a reliable and scalable lab environment. Support SSD hardware bring-up, configuration, validation readiness, and ongoing maintenance for project-specific platforms. Build, configure, modify, and maintain NVMe/PCIe SSD test systems, hosts, debug systems, and supporting lab infrastructure.

Execute defined test plans, manual procedures, pre-flight checks, and system validation steps with strong attention to detail. Troubleshoot hardware, software, firmware, connectivity, power, and system-level setup issues to restore lab readiness. Capture and summarize diagnostic data, logs, failure observations, and debug details to support engineering analysis.

Manage lab inventory, asset tracking, hardware reuse, check-in/check-out processes, and project-specific hardware availability. Coordinate shipping, receiving, internal movement, and tracking of SSD and non-SSD hardware components. Preferred : Collaborate with engineering, validation, facilities, IT, and operations teams to support lab activities and project schedules.

Support lab planning activities related to rack allocation, space, power, equipment readiness, and future scalability. Communicate task status, risks, blockers, and dependencies clearly and proactively. Participate in team meetings and cross-functional discussions to provide updates on assigned activities.

Identify and implement efficiency improvements through automation, scripting, documentation, and repeatable lab processes. Support lab repair workflows, issue tracking, and process improvements for recurring lab activities. Technical Requirements:.
