What is a test engineer manager?

A Test Engineer Manager is a professional who oversees a team of test engineers responsible for ensuring the quality and reliability of software or hardware products. They coordinate testing activities, develop test strategies, manage resources, and communicate with other departments to meet project goals. In addition to technical oversight, they are responsible for mentoring team members, setting performance goals, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The role requires strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a test engineer manager?

To thrive as a Test Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in software testing, quality assurance methodologies, and leadership experience, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), test management systems, and relevant certifications like ISTQB is highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and team leadership skills help you effectively coordinate testing teams and deliver high-quality results. These competencies ensure reliable product releases, efficient team performance, and alignment with organizational quality standards.

We are a family-owned, growth-oriented company that takes pride in innovation, quality, and the success of our employees. Our team members are passionate about creating reliable solutions for our customers worldwide while upholding our values of integrity, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
About the Role
The Test Engineer position is responsible for supporting and improving the on-going operations of the H-J Test Lab, which is primarily focused on the testing of electrical bushings and related components produced by H-J Enterprises as well as outside customers operating in the electrical power industry. These bushings and components are required to meet IEEE and IEC international specifications. This includes planning and executing tests, establishing and maintaining test capabilities and processes, and maintaining and improving lab safety as well as lab practices necessary to comply with IOS 17025 laboratory accreditation. The Test Engineer position ensures compliance with these standards by validating product designs through a comprehensive range of testing activities, including electrical, mechanical, thermal, environmental, and chemical testing. The Test Engineer is not involved in the manufacture of products being tested.
What You'll Do
  • Conduct design type testing on a range of H-J electrical products including EPC (epoxy) bushings from 1.2kV class to 69kV class, power class bushings, porcelain Air-Air type bushings and low-voltage components as used on transformers and switchgear.
  • Conduct design type testing on OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customers products related to the electrical power industry, including: power class bushings, low voltage bushings, high voltage bushings, insulators, plug-in type bushings, switch tap-changer, switchgear, transformers and dual-voltage switch testing.
  • Prepare cost estimates for quotation of testing services to outside OEM customers.
  • Interface with customers, sales, engineering, manufacturing and purchasing to ensure clear definition of test requirements, methods, and resources.
  • Develop test methods for cost and time reduction, fixtures, and procedures as required.
  • Testing includes but is not limited to AC withstand (Hipot), Partial Discharge Measurements, Impulse testing, and temperature rise withstand.
  • Design new test fixtures (using Solidworks 3D design software as necessary) for different components according to rated voltage, size, and weight, and arrange for their purchase and/or manufacture.
  • Provide technical support to H-J production for diagnosis of failures that occur during routine production testing, allowing H-J to supply quality products to meet the continuous demand of the electrical power industry.
  • Prepare certified test reports to report the test results of projects.
  • Perform electrical, mechanical, thermal and environmental tests as needed.
  • Write purchase requisitions for material, tools, supplies and equipment needed for testing projects and for daily operation of the test lab.
  • Support test lab safety procedures and policies.
  • Support continuous improvement in test lab equipment, methods, organization, and cleanliness.
  • Support the test equipment calibration program by maintaining calibration logs as per ISO 17025 accreditation standards.
  • Support the quality management system of the test lab by implementing Kaizen layouts and integrating uncertainty calculations for H-J owned electrical equipment in the Test Lab.

Position requires possible international travel up to 5% of the time to visit company and client facilities in Mexico.
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a closely related field (or foreign degree equivalent) and 5 years of relevant experience.

The Position also requires the following:
  • 5 years of experience with testing and calibration services, specifically with electric high voltage measurement systems in direct current, alternating current, voltage impulse and electrical partial discharge;
  • 5 years of experience supporting and developing specifications and procedures related to testing and/or calibrations of equipment for quality assurance and safety, including risk assessment and mitigation;
  • 5 years of experience preparing and updating technical procedures related to metrological traceability of measurements and equipment; and
  • 4 years of experience implementing and ensuring compliance with ISO 17025 standards.
