What are Test Engineer Interns?

Test Engineer Interns are entry-level professionals, often students or recent graduates, who assist engineering teams in the testing and quality assurance of software or hardware products. Their responsibilities typically include executing test cases, documenting results, identifying bugs, and collaborating with developers to improve product quality. This role provides hands-on experience with testing tools and methodologies, preparing interns for future careers in quality assurance or software engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Test Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Test Engineer Intern, you need foundational knowledge in software testing principles, programming basics, and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with test automation tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), bug tracking systems, and version control software is commonly required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for identifying software defects, ensuring product quality, and collaborating efficiently within development teams.

What types of projects and tasks can a Test Engineer Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Test Engineer Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on projects such as writing and executing test cases, automating test scripts, and identifying software defects. Interns often collaborate closely with developers and other QA team members to ensure software quality and help reproduce and troubleshoot issues. You may also participate in daily stand-up meetings, contribute to test documentation, and learn to use industry-standard testing tools. This role provides a valuable opportunity to develop technical and teamwork skills in a real-world engineering environment.

Job Description
Who You'll Work With
Arista Networks is looking for world-class Software Test Engineers (aka System Test engineers) to help us in building the highest quality networking products for the AGNI team.
Arista Guardian for Network Identity (AGNI) is Arista's network identity and access management solution. It provides secure authentication, authorization, and visibility for users, devices, and applications accessing the network. AGNI uses a cloud-native, microservices-based architecture and leverages ML/AI to simplify operations, support zero-trust security, and scale with modern enterprise networks. It integrates with existing identity sources and network infrastructure and is available as both a SaaS and on-premises solution.
If you love networking, working on complex & scaled out network topologies makes you excited and if you like to challenge yourself to find the hard-to-find bugs and if troubleshooting & debugging network and system problems gives you a thrill, this role is tailor made for you.
At Arista, you'll bring your intelligence, creativity, and drive every day & work with our products exactly how they are going to be used by our end customers and while doing so, make sure that the products are going to work every time. You will engage with our products as end-users would, ensuring their consistent functionality and reliability.
Your job is to find the hard bugs, the ones not easily exposed by the developers' automated unit and product level tests. You will NOT spend your time running manual regressions of mind numbing, 1000 page test plans, because Arista's developers automate all the basic functional and integration tests.
Courtesy of our super collaborative work environment, you'll spend your time embedded deeply with multiple engineering teams, working side by side with the developers, POC engineers, account teams, working together as one team and do all of it to help us to explore, find and fix software problems before they can reach the customers. We take quality seriously and we invite you to be a champion of software quality!!
What You'll Do
  • Work with the developers in your team in creating their plans for automated tests to complement the exploratory testing that you perform.
  • Participate in functional specification and software design reviews held by your team and provide customer centric input.
  • Work in a highly productive environment along with the best of the engineers on the Linux platform that cuts a typical development cycle by order of magnitude with a laser focus towards quality.
  • Use every means possible to find the bugs in the software and/or hardware being developed by your team.
  • Write test plans to validate Arista features and products.
  • Design test network topologies to validate functionality, performance, stability and scalability of features and products.
  • Execute test plans to verify all aspects of the product. Identify defects and validate resolution.
  • Work as an agile member of a combined development and test team, running in short cycles to develop functional software in quick iterations.

Qualifications
  • BS CS/CE/EE plus 1+ years of experience. MS degree preferred
  • Experience in creating test methodologies and writing test plans or System Software skills.
  • Strong knowledge in the following areas: 802.1X, RADIUS, TACACS+, AAA, NAC, VLANs, IP Routing, TCP/IP, L2-L3 protocols.
  • Experience in configuring wired switches and/or wireless access points of different vendors for network access use-cases.
  • Familiarity with Identity Providers like Okta, Microsoft Active Directory, OneLogin are desirable.
  • Desirable to have experience in testing cloud-native SaaS applications • Experience with working on other AAA or NAC products like ISE and ClearPass are desirable.
  • Good working knowledge of structured programming languages such as Python, Go, C, C++ etc. desirable
  • Strong communication skills.

Compensation:
  • The intern base pay for this role is $80,000 to $85,000 / year.
  • Arista offers different pay ranges based on work location, so that we can offer consistent and competitive pay appropriate to the market. The actual base pay offered will be based on a wide range of factors, including skills, qualifications, relevant experience, and work location.
  • The pay range provided reflects base pay only.

Additional Information
Hybrid:
  • Interns will work in one of our offices about 3 days per week
  • Particular schedules will be worked out with your mentor's and manager's input

Perks:
  • Awesome intern events
  • Special intern-only swag
  • Company-provided MacBook or ThinkPad
  • Free snacks, drinks, and coffee
