What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Test Development, and why are they important?

To excel in Test Development, strong analytical skills, a background in educational measurement or psychometrics, and a relevant degree such as education, psychology, or statistics are essential. Familiarity with test authoring platforms, statistical analysis software (like SPSS or R), and knowledge of standards such as item response theory (IRT) are typically required. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective collaboration are key soft skills for designing fair and valid assessments. These skills ensure the creation of reliable, unbiased, and meaningful tests that accurately measure intended outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced in a Test Development role, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in Test Development is ensuring that assessments are both valid and reliable while meeting tight deadlines. Balancing subject matter expertise with psychometric principles can also be demanding, particularly when collaborating with content experts and statisticians. Clear communication, careful project planning, and continuous professional development help address these challenges. Additionally, staying updated on assessment standards and using feedback from pilot tests can greatly improve test quality.

What is test development?

Test development is the process of designing, creating, and validating assessment tools such as exams, quizzes, or standardized tests. This process involves defining the purpose of the test, constructing test items, reviewing them for quality, and conducting statistical analyses to ensure reliability and validity. Test developers often work in educational, psychological, or professional certification contexts to measure knowledge, skills, or abilities accurately. The goal is to create fair, unbiased tests that provide meaningful information about the test takers.

Job description

Auria is looking to hire a Principal Integration and Test Engineer to support the RMWT GMI program. This role is ONSITE in Boulder, CO.
Resilient Missile Warning/Missile Track (MWT) program to develop a global missile tracking ground prototyping effort comprised of a MEO Satellite Operations Center (MSOC), backup MSOC (BMSOC), and MEO Ground Entry Points (GEP)s, hereby known as the MEO Epochs Ground (MEG) prototype. The acquisition of the MEG prototype is known as the Resilient MWT Ground Management and Integration (GMI) program. The MEG prototype builds on current development efforts for the MSOC and three MEO GEPs and will expand to include the BMSOC and a fourth and fifth MEO GEPs. The MEG prototype will enable operations and mission data delivery of a global tracking access system to contain raids of advanced hypersonic and ballistic missiles. This system will contain Space Vehicles (SVs) delivered in spirals known as Epochs. Auria's scope is around the constellation mission management capability, which will demonstrate the ability to function within a coordinated Overhead Persistent Infrared (IR) (OPIR) enterprise which receives taskings from the Joint OPIR Planning Center (JOPC), executes the tasking through sensor collections, and delivers missile data back to the enterprise. The system must provide low latency, accurate, and sensitive tracks to the enterprise while responding in near-real time to prioritized collection taskings.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO DO:
  • Design, develop, and implement manual and automated software unit and system-level tests in a Continuous Integration / Continuous Test (CI/CD) environment.
  • Determine the verification approach for system requirements and isolate software and system-level defects. Conduct and participate in formal test events at customer sites with government stakeholders to validate system capabilities.

  • Familiarity with the Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) mission and/or satellite ground systems.
  • Proven ability to isolate and resolve system-level issues, provide design feedback, and implement corrective actions across interdependent components.
  • Demonstrated ability to train personnel on relevant applications, ensuring knowledge transfer and operational readiness.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to support multiple test and demonstration events.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a collaborative and proactive team approach.
