What is a terminal manager?

Terminal Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the daily operations of transportation terminals, such as those for trucking, shipping, or logistics. They manage staff, coordinate shipments, ensure safety and compliance, and oversee the maintenance of facilities and equipment. Their role is critical in making sure goods are efficiently loaded, unloaded, and transported to their destinations. Terminal Managers also handle budgeting, scheduling, and customer service to ensure smooth and profitable operations.

What does a terminal manager do?

As a terminal manager, you oversee transportation operations for a company. In this role, you may dispatch transit vehicles, direct employees at the terminal itself, and otherwise ensure your transportation network continues to function properly. You may also schedule service and maintenance for the vehicles in your fleet. You often use radio systems to contact others and coordinate operations in order to maximize safety and efficiency. In this context, the word terminal usually refers to a truck terminal and should not be confused with other types of terminals, such as airport and seaport terminals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a terminal manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Terminal Manager, you need expertise in logistics operations, inventory management, and staff supervision, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in supply chain management or a related field. Familiarity with Transportation Management Systems (TMS), warehouse management software, and safety compliance certifications is highly beneficial. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring efficient terminal operations, maintaining safety standards, and achieving operational goals.

What are some common challenges terminal managers face when overseeing daily operations?

Terminal Managers often face challenges such as coordinating the efficient movement of goods, maintaining safety and compliance standards, and managing a diverse team working in shifts. They must balance operational efficiency with cost control and handle unexpected issues like equipment breakdowns or shipment delays. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as the role requires frequent collaboration with drivers, warehouse staff, and external partners to ensure smooth terminal operations.

The position is the primary information technology presence at park sites statewide, spanning camera systems, self-service kiosks, payment terminals, digital signage, visitor-counting instrumentation, and edge-computing equipment. This position reports to the Director of Parkspass and Innovation Labs, supervises student and hourly employees, and coordinates directly with park managers and staff across Utah's three park regions.
Responsibilities
  • Install, configure, and administer networked field systems across remote park sites statewide, including IP camera systems, self-service kiosks, payment terminals, digital signage platforms, visitor-counting sensors, and edge-computing devices running computer vision applications.
  • Administer cloud-based device management platforms, including camera services, digital signage content management systems, and kiosk fleet management tools; monitor device health remotely and apply configuration and firmware updates.
  • Perform network diagnostics, connectivity troubleshooting, and repair across cellular, wireless, and wired infrastructure at locations without on-site information technology support.
  • Deploy, configure, and support point-of-sale and payment systems statewide; train park and museum staff on system operation and transaction workflows.
  • Serve as the escalation point for park staff and visitors experiencing technical issues with Parkspass systems, resolving problems beyond the scope of front-line staff.
  • Collaborate directly with the Parkspass software engineering team on platform products, including field testing, defect reporting, and product feedback informed by on-site operations.
  • Oversee visitor pass fulfillment operations, including production, inventory, and distribution of physical passes and credentials, and investigation and resolution of fulfillment exceptions and delivery failures across systems.
  • Supervise student and hourly employees supporting fulfillment and field operations; review and manage timesheets for hourly staff.
  • Coordinate onboarding of new interns and student employees in direct partnership with University Human Resources.
  • Plan and coordinate deployments and pilots with park managers and staff statewide, including scheduling, site preparation, and installation.
  • Conduct field data collection and geographic information system (GIS) work, including GPS-tagging of park amenities and mapping of park infrastructure.
  • Manage equipment inventory and maintain accurate records of deployed assets and field service activity.
  • Travel regularly to state parks across all regions to support installations and ongoing operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, engineering technology, geographic information systems, business, or a related field required. A combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Two years of related internship or job experience required; experience deploying or administering networked hardware systems, managing field or multi-site technical operations, or working with state or national government agencies preferred. The total qualifications required are based on a combination of education and work experience. Any experience used to meet the education requirement cannot also be used to meet the work experience requirement.
  • Hands-on experience installing, configuring, and maintaining networked hardware such as IP cameras, kiosks, payment terminals, sensors, digital signage, networking equipment, or similar devices.
  • Working knowledge of network diagnostics, connectivity troubleshooting, and basic system administration, including remote device management platforms.
  • Experience supporting point-of-sale or payment systems and training end users preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage operations across multiple sites, including scheduling, logistics, and inventory management.
  • Experience supervising employees or student workers, including timekeeping or onboarding responsibilities, preferred.
  • Experience with GIS tools and GPS data collection preferred.
  • Ability to travel frequently to remote park locations and to work outdoors in variable field conditions.
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to lift and move equipment required.
