HACKENSACK PUBLIC SCHOOLS

SUBSTITUTE CUSTODIANS

SCHOOL YEAR 2026-2027

Title:  Substitute Custodians

Description:  Performs custodial maintenance duties including dusting, mopping, finishing and buffing floors, vacuuming and shampooing carpet, cleaning and restoring restrooms.

Job Duties:  

-  Cleans facilities and grounds and performs simple repairs to provide a safe, attractive and clean environment for learning.

- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, at least at an eighth grade level, using proper grammar and vocabulary 

- Have integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative. 

- Demonstrate aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities.

- Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status and required criminal background check.

- Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities with reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C.12101 and in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A. 

- Follows work schedules and temporary work schedules assigned by the Head Custodian and/or Principal of the School.

- Keeps Assigned areas of the buildings and grounds, (including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas) neat, clean, and safe, completing the tasks outlined in the Custodial Services Plan for the building. 

- Scrubs, cleans, and disinfects daily all assigned drinking fountains, bathroom floors, and sanitary fixtures. 

- Washes windows and cleans shades and blinds on an established and regular schedule. Keep all floors clean.

- Performs assignments relating to ensuring all schools and district sites are able to safely open and function when assigned. This includes working cooperatively with custodial employees during emergency operations.

- Cleans up body fluids from a sick or injured person, following prescribed procedures. 

- Checks regularly the security of the building and ensures that all exit doors are operational, and that all panic hardware is working when the building is occupied.


 

Qualifications:  

- Hold a valid driver's license with no serious violations

- Have a minimum of one year of previous work related experience

- Hold a Black Seal License (optional)

Working Conditions:  District Wide; 12 month temporary position; 28 hours per week maximum
