Job Summary:
Under direct supervision of the Manager, Parking Services, Student Assistant - Parking Enforcement Community Service Officers (CSOs) play an essential role in supporting the daily operations of the Parking and Transportation Services Department. As part of a student team dedicated to serving the campus community, you will assist with customer service, parking enforcement, and public safety support. CSOs serve as ambassadors of the department, ensuring a positive, safe, and welcoming experience for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
In this position, you will provide information about parking rules & regulations, permits, and campus transportation programs, while also conducting patrols of parking lots, issuing citations when necessary, and responding to motorist assistance calls. CSOs represent the Public Safety Department through professionalism, courtesy, and commitment to campus safety.
This is a hands-on opportunity to gain valuable experience in customer service, problem solving, and public service within a professional university environment.

Responsibilities:

Under direct supervision of the Manager, Parking Services, duties include but not limited to:

  • Serve frequently as the first point of contact for the campus by greeting visitors and providing accurate information about parking permits, citations, and transportation services.
  • Communicate professionally in person, by radio, phone, and electronically to assist customers with parking rules and regulations, citation inquiries, and general questions.
  • Patrol campus parking lots, structures, and roadways on foot, bicycle, or departmental vehicle to monitor compliance with campus parking regulations.
  • Assist the Community Service Specialist staff to Issue parking citations using electronic handheld devices and provide information on citation appeal procedures.
  • Assist motorists with services such as battery jumps and vehicle unlocks using department-approved equipment and safety protocols.
  • Provide directions, general campus information, and safety escorts when requested.
  • Assist the Community Services Specialist by setting up and removing cones, barricades, and signage for traffic control during campus events.
  • Providing coverage at the Information Center's Service Window as needed. This entails providing information to guests on campus directions, parking rules and regulations.
  • Assist with administrative and clerical tasks such as filing, data entry, sorting mail, and organizing office materials.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, professional workspace and departmental vehicle.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.
  • Special Qualification: Admission or registration as a CSU student.
  • As a Bridge Student Assistant, the student need not be registered as a student but must have been enrolled as a CSU student the previous term and is registered for the following term.

Required Qualifications:

  • Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
  • Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate)
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate)
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Payroll Requirement: Social Security Card

Preferred Qualifications:
Written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally across diverse groups.
Excellent customer service and conflict-resolution skills.
Ability to learn and apply parking regulations and enforcement procedures accurately.
Comfortable working independently while also contributing to a team environment.
Organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and adaptable to learning new software such as T2 Flex and citation systems.
Prior experience in customer service, public safety, or administrative support is highly desirable.
Must demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and discretion when handling sensitive information.
Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors, sometimes in varying weather conditions.
Must consistently demonstrate punctuality, accountability, and a commitment to department standards.

Compensation and Benefits:

Student Employment Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.90 per hour.

The compensation offered will consider internal equity and experience among other factors.

Position Information:

Work status: Part-Time, Temporary, Seasonal

Academic year available hours: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm).

Summer available hours: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm).

Background Check
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) may be required for student employment purposes. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check when required may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Driver's License Check
Possession of a valid Driver's License may be required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
