Temporary Structural Engineer information

What does a temporary structural engineer do?

A Temporary Structural Engineer is responsible for designing and analyzing temporary structures used during the construction process, such as scaffolding, formwork, shoring, and supports. They ensure these temporary systems are safe, stable, and comply with building codes while construction or maintenance work takes place. Their work involves close collaboration with construction teams to adapt designs to site conditions and project schedules. Temporary Structural Engineers play a critical role in preventing accidents and ensuring the overall safety of a construction site.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a temporary structural engineer?

To thrive as a Temporary Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering, typically supported by a relevant degree and professional engineering licensure. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis tools like SAP2000 or ETABS is crucial, along with knowledge of building codes. Strong problem-solving, communication, and time management skills help you excel in project-driven, often deadline-sensitive environments. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and compliant structural designs within the limited timeframe of temporary assignments.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a temporary structural engineer expect?

As a Temporary Structural Engineer, you will often be brought in to support specific projects or to cover for short-term increases in workload. Typical responsibilities include performing structural analysis, preparing calculations and design documentation, reviewing drawings, and coordinating with architects and contractors. You may also be asked to conduct site inspections and ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards. Temporary assignments offer valuable exposure to a variety of project types and allow you to collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, which can broaden your experience and enhance your professional network.

What is the difference between Temporary Structural Engineer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectTemporary Structural EngineerStructural Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering; licensure may not be mandatory for temporary rolesRequires a bachelor's degree, and often a Professional Engineer (PE) license for independent practice
Work EnvironmentProject-based, short-term assignments on construction sites or consulting firmsLong-term employment in design firms, consulting, or construction companies
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by firms needing temporary support during peak projects or staff shortagesEmployed for ongoing design, analysis, and project management tasks

Temporary Structural Engineers provide short-term support for specific projects, often on a contract basis, while Structural Engineers typically hold permanent roles with broader responsibilities in design and analysis. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds, but licensure and employment stability differ.
