What Does a Temporary Software Developer Do?

A temporary software developer works on a freelance or contract basis. Your duties focus on the development, design, and testing of software programs. You may have a different set of responsibilities depending on the details of each project, such as working with computer code to develop programs or create a mobile application. A temporary software developer can work on one facet of a project, such as testing or coding a specific process. Developers sometimes specialize in working with one computer language, although knowledge of multiple coding languages is beneficial in this career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, familiarity with software development life cycles, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Proficiency with coding languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), version control systems like Git, and project management tools is typically required. Adaptability, quick learning, and effective communication are essential soft skills to integrate into new teams and projects swiftly. These skills enable a Temporary Software Developer to contribute efficiently, deliver quality code under tight timelines, and support the organization's short-term technical needs.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Temporary Software Developer expect during a typical assignment?

As a Temporary Software Developer, you will often be brought in to support ongoing projects, address backlog tasks, or assist during periods of increased workload. Your responsibilities may include writing and testing code, debugging existing applications, and collaborating with permanent team members to meet tight deadlines. You may also be involved in documentation and code review processes, and your ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and workflows will be highly valued. The work environment is typically fast-paced, and clear communication with both developers and project managers is important to ensure a smooth integration into the team.

What are Temporary Software Developers?

Temporary Software Developers are professionals hired on a short-term basis to design, develop, test, and maintain software applications for a company or project. They typically work on specific assignments, such as filling in for permanent staff, addressing urgent project needs, or providing specialized skills for a limited period. Their contracts usually have fixed durations, and they may work independently or as part of a team. Temporary roles offer flexibility for both employers and developers, but may not include the same benefits as permanent positions.

This person will own full-cycle recruiting for complex software engineering functions with a particular emphasis on Autonomy, Robotics, Embedded Software, Perception, Planning, Controls, Distributed Systems, and other highly specialized technical domains supporting next-generation aerospace and autonomous systems development.

This is not a traditional recruiting role. We are looking for someone who can operate as a true talent partner to engineering leadership, helping shape hiring strategy, influence workforce planning, drive prioritization discipline, and build scalable pipelines for some of the hardest-to-hire technical talent in the industry.

The ideal candidate thrives in high-growth, high-ambiguity environments and brings a strong track record of closing senior and niche software engineering talent while balancing speed, quality, and stakeholder partnership.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
  • Own full-cycle recruiting for highly specialized software engineering roles across Autonomy, Robotics, Perception, Planning, Embedded Software, Distributed Systems, Simulation, Machine Learning, Infrastructure, and related technical domains
  • Build and execute proactive sourcing strategies for difficult-to-find technical talent across aerospace, defense, robotics, autonomous systems, automotive, AI/ML, and adjacent industries
  • Act as a strategic advisor to leadership on market trends, talent availability, compensation competitiveness, and hiring risks
  • Drive strong operational rigor across pipeline management, funnel health, data accuracy, and stakeholder communication
  • Help influence workforce planning and ensure hiring activity remains aligned to approved business priorities
  • Improve recruiting scalability through process improvements, documentation, interview calibration, and tooling optimization
  • Deliver an exceptional candidate experience while maintaining urgency and high hiring quality standards
  • Mentor junior recruiters and sourcers while helping elevate recruiting best practices across the organization
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 10+ years of full-cycle technical recruiting experience, including significant ownership of complex software engineering searches
  • Proven success recruiting Software Engineers, Autonomy Engineers, Robotics Engineers, Embedded Software Engineers, Perception Engineers, Infrastructure Engineers, Machine Learning Engineers, or similar technical talent
  • Strong understanding of software engineering concepts, technical architectures, and engineering organizational structures
  • Experience partnering with senior engineering leadership in fast-paced or high-growth environments
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex searches simultaneously while maintaining strong hiring outcomes
  • Strong sourcing and market-mapping capabilities across highly competitive technical domains
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and operational execution skills
  • Experience using ATS systems, sourcing platforms, and recruiting analytics to drive decisions and pipeline visibility
  • Ability to operate strategically while remaining highly execution-oriented
$120,000 - $180,000 a year
