Temporary Software Developer information

What is a temporary software developer?

Temporary Software Developers are professionals hired on a short-term basis to design, develop, test, and maintain software applications for a company or project. They typically work on specific assignments, such as filling in for permanent staff, addressing urgent project needs, or providing specialized skills for a limited period. Their contracts usually have fixed durations, and they may work independently or as part of a team. Temporary roles offer flexibility for both employers and developers, but may not include the same benefits as permanent positions.

What does a temporary software developer do?

A temporary software developer works on a freelance or contract basis. Your duties focus on the development, design, and testing of software programs. You may have a different set of responsibilities depending on the details of each project, such as working with computer code to develop programs or create a mobile application. A temporary software developer can work on one facet of a project, such as testing or coding a specific process. Developers sometimes specialize in working with one computer language, although knowledge of multiple coding languages is beneficial in this career.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a temporary software developer expect during a typical assignment?

As a Temporary Software Developer, you will often be brought in to support ongoing projects, address backlog tasks, or assist during periods of increased workload. Your responsibilities may include writing and testing code, debugging existing applications, and collaborating with permanent team members to meet tight deadlines. You may also be involved in documentation and code review processes, and your ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and workflows will be highly valued. The work environment is typically fast-paced, and clear communication with both developers and project managers is important to ensure a smooth integration into the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, familiarity with software development life cycles, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Proficiency with coding languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), version control systems like Git, and project management tools is typically required. Adaptability, quick learning, and effective communication are essential soft skills to integrate into new teams and projects swiftly. These skills enable a Temporary Software Developer to contribute efficiently, deliver quality code under tight timelines, and support the organization's short-term technical needs.

Job description

Description:

Role Summary

The Software Engineer designs, develops, tests, integrates, and maintains software that supports BSG products, customer requirements, research and development activities, and internal engineering needs. The position works within BSG's established software and system architecture and collaborates with other engineers and technical specialists to deliver reliable, maintainable, and deployable software capabilities.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong proficiency in one or more modern programming languages.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, developing, testing, debugging, and maintaining software.
  • Strong understanding of software-engineering fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, modular design, interfaces, and object-oriented or functional programming concepts as applicable.
  • Experience working with version-control systems such as Git.
  • Experience with software testing, debugging, code review, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to develop maintainable, testable, and reusable software components.
  • Familiarity with APIs, data processing, services, system interfaces, or distributed software architectures.
  • Ability to understand and work within an existing codebase and established system architecture.
  • Ability to diagnose software defects and identify root causes rather than relying solely on temporary fixes.
  • Familiarity with common development environments, build systems, dependency-management tools, and software-development workflows.
  • Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other software engineers and cross-functional technical team members.
  • Ability to communicate technical decisions, risks, blockers, and recommendations clearly.
  • Ability to manage assigned work with limited supervision and raise issues when additional direction is required, and to mentor or provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
  • Strong attention to quality, security, maintainability, and reliability.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving technical environment with changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ownership, accountability, curiosity, and willingness to learn unfamiliar technologies or problem domains.
  • Experience working in Agile or Scrum development environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Python, C++, or other languages relevant to BSG's technical stack.
  • Experience developing Linux-based software.
  • Experience with Docker, containers, cloud environments, CI/CD, or infrastructure automation.
  • Experience building backend services, APIs, data-processing systems, distributed applications, or similar software.
  • Familiarity with machine-learning systems or integrating ML models into software applications.
  • Experience working with GPU computing or accelerated software.
  • Experience with real-time, embedded, edge, sensor, RF, DSP, or signal-processing applications.
  • Experience with performance optimization, concurrency, networking, or high-throughput data systems.
  • Experience with defense, aerospace, government, communications, ISR, or mission-focused technology.
  • Eligibility to obtain a U.S. security clearance where required for assigned work.
