The schedule and duration depend on the company's needs and project scope.

What are some typical challenges faced by temporary scrum masters when joining a new team?

Temporary Scrum Masters often encounter the challenge of rapidly building trust and understanding team dynamics while integrating into an unfamiliar environment. They must quickly assess workflow bottlenecks, team communication habits, and organizational culture to provide effective support and guidance. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the temporary scrum master position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Scrum Master, you need a strong grasp of Agile methodologies, facilitation skills, and practical experience leading Scrum teams, often supported by a Scrum Master certification such as CSM or PSM. These skills ensure you can effectively guide teams, remove impediments, and maintain momentum within time-limited assignments.

Are temporary Scrum Masters being phased out?

Temporary Scrum Masters are still in demand for short-term projects or organizations seeking flexible staffing. However, many companies prefer full-time Scrum Masters with certifications like CSM or PSM for ongoing Agile team support, so the prevalence of temporary roles varies by industry and project needs.

Job description

Job Title: Senior Scrum Master (Enterprise ERP Transformation)
Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Scrum Master to lead the delivery of a multi-year, enterprise-wide digital transformation. In this role, you will be the "bridge" between an Agile development culture and a structured, traditional enterprise environment. You are not just facilitating stand-ups; you are navigating the tension between sprint-based delivery and the rigid milestones, stage-gates, and data-migration dependencies that characterize complex, large-scale ERP implementations.
This role is for a servant leader who can guide cross-functional teams (functional, technical, and business) through the complexity of modernizing core enterprise systems. If you thrive in high-stakes environments where Agile delivery meets enterprise-level governance, this is an opportunity to make a massive impact.
Key Responsibilities
Agile Delivery & Governance
• Servant Leadership: Act as a Scrum Master for 1-2 cross-functional teams. Facilitate all standard ceremonies (Stand-ups, Planning, Reviews, Retrospectives) with a focus on empirical delivery and continuous improvement.
• Hybrid Governance: Successfully navigate the balance between Agile velocity and the requirements of a traditional PMO (stage-gates, RAID logs, formal project reporting).
• Cross-Stream Integration: Coordinate dependencies, blockers, and risks across various ERP workstreams. Ensure your team's delivery is synchronized with data migration, testing, and cutover workstreams.
Backlog & Planning
• Backlog Orchestration: Collaborate with Product Owners and Business Analysts to maintain a prioritized, "ready-for-dev" backlog. Facilitate story refinement and sizing for functional enhancements and technical configuration.
• Scaled Agile Support: Participate in "Agile at Scale" ceremonies (e.g., PI Planning, Scrum of Scrums, System Demos). Partner with Release Train Engineers and Solution Architects to align team deliveries with program increments.
Reporting & Metrics
• Performance Visibility: Manage team progress via Jira (or equivalent). Maintain dashboards that provide transparency on velocity, burndown, and team health, ensuring stakeholders have a real-time view of progress.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
• Experience Baseline: Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Scrum Master in enterprise-scale Agile environments.
• ERP Literacy: Proven experience supporting major ERP implementations (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Workday). You must understand the unique constraints of an ERP project (data-heavy, configuration-driven, inter-dependent).
• Methodology Mastery: Strong understanding of Agile (Scrum, Kanban) and the nuances of Hybrid-Agile delivery models.
• Scaling Expertise: Experience in scaled Agile frameworks (e.g., SAFe) and managing dependencies between multiple teams.
• Technical Communication: Excellent facilitation and conflict-resolution skills. You must be able to bridge the gap between functional business teams and technical developers.
Preferred Attributes
• Experience with ERP-specific implementation methodologies (e.g., SAP Activate or similar stage-gate frameworks).
• High proficiency in Jira and Confluence.
• A track record of facilitating difficult conversations across organizational silos.
