Job description

Mission Statement

Responsibilities*
The IPOP Registered Nurse is accountable for the delivery of direct patient care, including patient education and the management of patients undergoing cell and gene therapy.
Coordination of hospital admissions from IPOP
The Registered Nurse (RN) supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family; assesses the needs of the patient undergoing infusion treatment; plans, implements, and evaluates patient care; and teaches patients, families, orients colleagues and peers.
The RN administers cell and gene therapy, IV hydration, blood products, chemotherapy, biotherapy and immunotherapy. They are also responsible for managing the daily needs throughout the patient?s admission to the IPOP unit.
  • High acuity symptom monitoring for CRS, neurotoxicity, infection, dehydration, and infusion reactions
  • Support investigational and research-based cellular therapy protocols including protocol-specific monitoring, specimen collection, investigational product administration, toxicity assessment support, and required documentation/compliance activities.
  • Coordinate research-related clinical activities including study-specific education, protocol implementation support, investigational infusion workflows, and collaboration with research, regulatory, and clinical trial teams.
  • Support for FACT accreditation and regulatory compliance.
  • Coordination of admissions and follow up from Oncology Treatment evaluation center (OTEC)

Expectations
  • Demonstrated ability to start IV?s, access ports and maintain vascular access
  • Demonstrated ability to administer the required therapies as well as manage the complex needs of each individual patient.
  • Demonstrated ability to practice independently, set goals, promote teamwork, coordinate and perform multiple activities and problem solve as measured by interview, references, and performance evaluations
  • Demonstrated ability to set and implement priorities, organize and delegate effectively and efficiently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and communicate well with others (including peers)
  • Demonstrate abilities in interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills and problem-solving skill within all levels of the health care team
  • Participate in program building experiences to facilitate safe practice.

Required Qualifications*
  • Five (5) years or more of RN experience
  • Two (2) or more years of recent (in the last 3 years) cellular therapy/BMT RN experience

Desired Qualifications*
  • Two (2) or more years of recent (in the last 6 years) Ambulatory Care Infusion Experience
  • Experience with IV insertion
  • BSN
  • Certification by Oncology Certified Nurse-OCN, Certification by Bone Marrow Transplant Certified Nurse-BMTCN

Modes of Work
Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes .
Work Schedule
  • Hours: 36 hrs/wk, Monday - Sunday
  • Shift: Days Variable days of the week; including weekends and holidays. Variable shift lengths. Flexibility required.
  • The standard hours of operation for the IPOP unit are variable. Weekend and holiday hours added based on patient needs.
  • Location and home unit: CS Mott Hospital and any other location where cell and gene therapy is administered.

Union Affiliation
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
