Job description

The University of Iowa Healthcare Walk-In Clinics is seeking a 65% (26 hours a week) Physician Assistant (PA) to primarily support our Iowa City/Corridor Walk-In Clinics (Urgent Care/QuickCare Clinics). Physician Assistant performs direct patient care, including diagnostic and therapeutic services. Within the Physician Assistant (PA)/Physician relationship, the PA will exercise autonomy in medical decision making and services provided. Our Physician Assistant's will exercise autonomy in medical decision making and services provided. The PA's will also assist in educating healthcare students, as they rotate through the respective departments and divisions and will assist in research endeavors as appropriate. UI Walk-in Clinics provide care to try to save our patients a trip to the emergency room. We're open evenings, weekends, and even some holidays. Our clinics are responsible to assess a wide variety of patients from newborn to geriatric and ensures patient care standards are met and provides access to additional care options not normally found at your traditional walk-in clinic, including X-rays, IV fluids, and stitches. This position is part of a dynamic and fast paced environment, rich with opportunities for learning and growth. We utilize a multidisciplinary approach to patient care that encourages teamwork between multiple disciplinary team to provide the most comprehensive care to our patients. We have multiple clinics throughout the corridor area, as well as two locations in the Quad Cities, allowing our patients to find a location that is convenient to them. This position reports to the Medical Director within the UI Healthcare Walk In Clinics and Lead APP within UI Community Clinics.
This position will mainly support Iowa City/Corridor sites but could also support other service lines/clinics based on clinical needs/hours, including our Quad Cities clinic sites.
BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:
Physician Assistant performs direct patient care, including diagnostic and therapeutic services. Within the Physician Assistant (PA)/Physician relationship, the PA will exercise autonomy in medical decision making and services provided. The PA will also assist in educating healthcare students, as they rotate through the respective departments and divisions and will assist in research endeavors as appropriate. This position reports to the Medical Director within the UI Community Clinics and Lead APP within UI Community Clinics.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide medical care and management for patients, exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided in the Walk-In Clinics, will rotate to different Walk-in Clinics, and also utilize online telehealth platforms.
  • Obtain medical history and perform physical examination.
  • Assess, assist, diagnose and treat medical or surgical problems and record findings.
  • Perform or assist in and interpret the performance of laboratory and related studies.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, the suturing and care of wounds, removal of foreign bodies, ear and eye irrigation and other clinical procedures.
  • Assist in arranging for continued care such as but not limited to: transfer to the Emergency Treatment Center; follow-up care or establishment of care with a primary care provider; and/or follow-up consultations (including referrals to appropriate specialty and subspecialty physicians as indicated by patients' problems).
  • Perform and screen results of special medical exams including but not limited to electrocardiogram, radiography, audiometric and vision screening, tonometry, and pulmonary function screening tests.
  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding physical and mental health on matters such as diets, disease, therapy, and normal growth and development.
  • Evaluate, treat, and institute procedures essential to providing an appropriate response to urgent medical problems.
  • Maintain awareness of health facilities, agencies, and resources in order to facilitate the appropriate referral of patients.
  • Order medications and administer drugs.
  • Direct other medical personnel and health professionals in the execution of patient care.
  • Perform duties appropriate to a physician's practice.
  • Participate in educating health care students in various programs.
  • Participate in committees within the division, department, College of Medicine and University of Iowa Health Care.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned on a permanent or temporary basis.

Percent of Time: 65% (26 hours per week)
Schedule: Variable work hours between 7:00 AM-7:30 PM Sunday-Saturday, rotating weekend and holiday time. Clinical location could change based on the clinic need/hour.
Location: Iowa City/Corridor clinical sites and surrounding clinic locations, including Quad Cities clinical sites (as needed).
Salary: $56,960.80 - $102,892.40 at 65% (Salary is based on years of experience)

EDUCATION REQUIRED
  • Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and certification by the NCCPA.

REQUIRED Qualifications
  • Licensed as PA in the state of Iowa.

  • Demonstrated experience in area of clinical practice is required.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage acutely ill patient population (of all ages) within a highly functioning unit/department.

  • Proved capacity to function with a high degree of autonomy while actively collaborating within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

  • Demonstrated experience fostering a welcoming and respectful work environment.

  • Current valid driver's license and the ability to meet the University Driving Policy Standards.

  • Availability to provide support at other clinical locations based on clinical hours/needs.

  • BLS, ACLS and PALS certification (obtained within first 6 months of employment).

Desired Qualifications
  • Minimum 1 year of acute patient care PA experience within Emergency Department, Urgent Care and/or Walk-In Clinic area(s), or Family Medicine.

  • Some knowledge of University policies and procedures desired.

  • Previous EPIC experience.

  • Comfortable with technology and leveraging video, or the desire to learn.
