What is the difference between Temporary Prototype Designer vs Product Designer?

AspectTemporary Prototype DesignerProduct Designer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in design, engineering, or related field; proficiency in prototyping toolsRequires a degree in design, UX/UI, or related field; strong portfolio and user-centered design skills
Work EnvironmentContract-based, project-specific, often in design agencies or tech companiesFull-time or freelance, involved in entire product lifecycle in tech, e-commerce, or software firms
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies needing quick prototypes or testing conceptsUsed by companies developing products, focusing on user experience and interface design

While both roles involve design and prototyping skills, a Temporary Prototype Designer focuses on creating quick, functional prototypes for specific projects, often on a contract basis. A Product Designer has a broader scope, including user research, UI/UX design, and overseeing the product development process. The choice depends on whether the project requires rapid prototyping or comprehensive product design expertise.

Job description

Job Title: Designer / Drafter – New Product Development

Job Description

This Designer/Drafter role in the New Product Development team focuses on transforming initial concepts into fully realized, manufacturable product designs. You will collaborate closely with engineers and cross-functional partners to guide new products from early idea through prototype, pilot, and release to production. You will create accurate, well-structured design documentation that meets industry standards and internal requirements, directly influencing product performance, manufacturability, cost, and overall project success.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Lead Project Engineer and cross-functional team members to translate product requirements into prototype and pilot designs.
  • Utilize 3D CAD software, such as PTC Creo, to develop digital models that support faster and more efficient development cycles.
  • Create detailed 3D models and engineering drawings based on concepts, sketches, or legacy designs, with a strong emphasis on manufacturability and quality.
  • Design sheet metal components using both 2D and 3D tools, ensuring appropriate tolerances and fit are achieved for reliable production.
  • Recommend efficient assembly and fabrication methods to optimize designs for cost, production feasibility, and ease of manufacturing.
  • Support technical and design reviews by presenting or assisting in the presentation of design models and documentation, ensuring alignment with internal processes and standards.
  • Prepare complete documentation packages for release to manufacturing, including detailed drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and machine files.
  • Manage and maintain accurate bills of materials, ensuring that all components, revisions, and configurations are correctly documented.
  • Interpret engineering sketches and technical specifications to develop precise design solutions that meet performance and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with a team of engineers on highly customizable products, contributing to projects that typically span from six months to two years in duration.

Essential Skills

  • Approximately 8 years of experience developing and creating new products, preferably in the electro-mechanical or electrical-mechanical product space.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, including experience with tools such as PTC Creo.
  • Experience in both 2D and 3D modeling software for mechanical design.
  • Strong experience in mechanical design and new product development.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D modeling and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes for mechanical and electrical components.
  • Strong understanding of bill of materials (BOM) preparation, structuring, and ongoing management.
  • Ability to accurately interpret engineering sketches, drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Ability to design sheet metal components with appropriate tolerances using 2D and 3D tools.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience using PTC Creo for 3D CAD modeling.
  • Experience with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD tools.
  • Experience working on electro-mechanical products and systems.
  • Experience supporting technical and design reviews by preparing and presenting 3D models and drawings.

Work Environment

The role is based in a newly opened office located near the manufacturing facility, providing close proximity to both design and production activities. You will work as part of a team of approximately a dozen engineers in a collaborative, project-focused environment. About 90% of your time will be spent at a desk performing design, modeling, and documentation work using CAD tools and related software. The remaining 10% of your time will be spent on the manufacturing floor, interacting with production teams, reviewing prototypes, and observing how designs translate into physical products. The team supports highly customizable products with project tenures typically ranging from six months to two years, offering exposure to complex, long-running development efforts in a dynamic and growing organization.
