Job description

Job Summary
The Michigan Biotrust for Health is seeking an organized Research Associate to support the next data collection and recruitment phase for a Multimedia Informed Consent Intervention study conducted throughout multiple sites across Michigan. The individual will complete standardized hospital process observations and collect survey data from women who have recently given birth at the University of Michigan Health-Sparrow in Lansing, MI.
The Research Assistant will be responsible for working with key hospital staff to identify and recruit eligible patients for the intervention study. Michigan Biotrust for Health is a state-wide program that oversees blood spot collection and its use in health research. The study evaluates the consent approach with underrepresented populations, with a focus on Spanish and Arabic speakers. The RA will approach new parents with a RedCap survey administered through a study tablet, QR code, email or text message. This is a .5 to .75 time position.
Responsibilities*
Job responsibilities
  • Identify, engage, and approach potential study participants within the newborn unit at the University of Michigan-Sparrow Health System.
  • Clearly explain the study's purpose and procedures to eligible individuals.
  • Work with identified hospital staff to determine the best times to approach patients
  • Screen and assess patients for eligibility based on predefined study criteria
  • Complete the verbal consent process with patients who are eligible for inclusion in the study
  • Maintain strict adherence to study protocols, ethical guidelines, and regulatory requirements throughout the recruitment process
  • Collect survey data on the provided tablet computer using RedCap
  • Provide gift cards to patients and keep a log of gift cards provided
  • Talk with the project Research Coordinator and Research Director on a weekly basis
  • Directly interact with subjects in a clinical setting, including stakeholder interviews, and administering survey instruments
  • Complete all other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*
  • Minimum one year of research or clinical experience
  • Background and interest in public health and genetics
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail
  • Available transportation to get to the participating hospital
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and effective communication skills
  • Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
