Job description

The Power Distribution Engineer is a direct hire position working in the Durango, CO area.
We are seeking an experienced Distribution Engineer to lead and manage the design and execution of electrical distribution projects. This role combines technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, making it ideal for a professional passionate about mentoring teams and delivering high-quality, innovative solutions.
Power Distribution Engineer Key Responsibilities:
1. Leadership and Team Coordination:
o Mentor and oversee a team of designers/stakers, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented environment.
o Provide guidance on design standards, project priorities, and technical challenges.
2. Project Design and Planning:
o Create detailed designs for overhead and underground electrical distribution systems (4 kV to 35 kV).
o Use industry-standard software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, O-Calc, GIS platforms) to prepare schematics, layouts, and as-built drawings.
o Perform calculations, interpret codes and standards, and develop construction packages.
3. Project Execution and Quality Control:
o Review designs to ensure compliance with utility standards and industry best practices.
o Conduct field inspections and site assessments to validate project specifications.
o Manage timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure successful project delivery.
o Help ensure coordination with other business functions such as ROW to keep common projects flowing smoothly and efficiently.
4. Client Interaction and Communication:
o Interface directly with clients to address technical challenges and maintain project progress.
o Provide clear and concise communication with internal and external stakeholders.
5. Compliance and Continuous Improvement:
o Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal regulations, including NESC, NEC, and IEEE standards.
o Stay current with emerging technologies, utility best practices, and renewable energy trends.
Power Distribution Engineer Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (power option preferred).
• 3-5 years of experience in the design and operation of overhead and underground distribution lines (4 kV to 35 kV).
• Proficiency with design software (e.g., NISC, PLS-Cadd, O-Calc) and familiarity with utility GIS platforms (e.g., GE Smallworld, ArcFM), and other staking software.
• Strong knowledge of utility standards, joint facilities design, and the National Electric Safety Code (NESC).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a customer-oriented mindset.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel as needed.
• Must be located within daily commuting distance of Durango, CO.
Power Distribution Engineer Preferred Qualifications:
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one within six months.
• Prior experience with medium- and low-voltage systems and renewable energy integration.
• Background in utility or industrial electrical distribution projects.
The pay for this position will be in the $70k-$110k range.
