General Description
Creates, maintains, and manages interactive data visualizations, reports, and dashboards using Microsoft Power BI. They are responsible for data modeling, writing DAX queries, importing data, and optimizing dashboards for performance to support data-driven decision-making. This role typically involves ETL processes and SQL proficiency. This role owns the full lifecycle of business intelligence delivery, from data extraction and modeling to DAX development and executive-facing reporting. The position combines technical BI development with financial and operational analysis to support data-driven decision-making across sales and leadership teams.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Power BI Developer
  • Data Preparation: Extracting, cleaning, and transforming raw data from various sources (SQL, Excel, APIs) using Power Query.
  • Data Modeling: Building and maintaining scalable data models, including complex relationships, hierarchies, calculated columns, and advanced DAX measures (e.g., tiered rebates, cumulative calculations, dynamic KPIs).
  • Report Creation: Build initial report layouts and dashboards, ensuring visual elements like charts and filters are correctly formatted.
  • Maintenance & Support: Monitor data refresh schedules, troubleshoot simple credential issues, and update existing reports as needed.
  • Documentation: Maintain technical records of data sources, transformation steps, report logic, modeling structure, and report definitions.
  • Performance Optimization: Improving dashboard efficiency and model performance through proper context management, optimized DAX, and structured data modeling practices.

Power BI Analyst
  • Requirements Gathering: Meet with business users to translate their abstract needs into specific technical reporting requirements.
  • Data Interpretation: Analyze reports to identify trends, patterns, and outliers that can drive business strategy.
  • Visual Storytelling: Use data to "tell a story" through dashboards that communicate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Data Validation: Ensure report accuracy by validating data against the original systems of record and resolving discrepancies.
  • Ad-hoc Analysis: Perform quick, high-priority data mining using SQL or Excel to answer urgent business questions.

Qualifications
  • Experience: Generally 5+ years of experience in business intelligence or data analysis.
  • Technical Skills: Spotfire, Strong SQL knowledge, proficiency in Power BI Desktop and Power Query, and familiarity with data warehousing concepts.
