Temporary Porter / Handyperson - Residential Buildings
Paths is a full-scale, vertically integrated affordable housing developer, builder, and operator. Since 2004, the Paths team created and preserved high-quality affordable housing across the U.S. that enhances communities and helps residents build better lives. With over 15,000 units across 12 states under management and more than 500 employees, Paths manages a suite of capabilities spanning the entire property life-cycle, including development, construction, property management, maintenance, and security.
Summary/Objective: The Temporary Porter / Handyperson supports the maintenance team with the day-to-day work needed to keep residential properties clean, safe, and operating properly. This role includes a mix of porter duties, property upkeep, unit prep, and light maintenance repairs in a residential setting. This position may support different residential buildings depending on coverage needs and may not be assigned to one fixed property. The assignment may conclude based on operational needs.

Classification: Non-exempt (eligible for overtime)
Location: Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Long Island, NY
Essential function/Responsibilities: duties include but are not limited to the following

  • Daily interior cleanliness of buildings, including general cleaning of common areas; tasks include but are not limited to cleaning up spills, cleaning windows and window coverings, vacuuming, sweeping, stripping, waxing, and buffing floors.

  • Daily trash handling and removal including emptying of the building’s compactors, breaking down and tying up cardboard boxes, and bringing trash and recyclables curbside for removal by the Department of Sanitation.

  • Prepare vacant units for occupancy, remove all items left behind, and leave units in broom-swept condition.

  • Perform exterior building and premises cleaning and basic upkeep, including exterior walls, parking lots and structures, walkways and paths, gardens and lawns, outdoor furnishings, curbs/gutters, exterior hallways, and stairwells.

  • Perform light maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, air filters, blinds, fixtures, and assisting with basic plumbing, electrical, and general repair needs as directed.

  • Assist with unit turns and basic work order completion, including minor repairs and preparation of apartments for new residents.

  • Report areas for unsafe conditions, unlocked doors in restricted areas, and potential security concerns on the grounds to the appropriate supervisor.

Pay Range: $18.00 - $19.50 per hour, depending on experience and role assignment

Porter / Property Upkeep

  • Maintain daily interior cleanliness of buildings, including common areas, windows, window coverings, floors, hallways, stairwells, and other shared spaces.
  • Clean spills, vacuum, sweep, mop, strip, wax, and buff floors as needed.
  • Handle daily trash and recycling, including emptying compactors, breaking down cardboard, tying boxes, and bringing trash/recyclables curbside for removal.
  • Prepare vacant units for occupancy by removing items left behind and leaving units in broom-swept condition.
  • Perform exterior building and grounds upkeep, including walkways, parking areas, gardens/lawns, outdoor furnishings, curbs, gutters, exterior hallways, and stairwells.
  • Report unsafe conditions, unlocked restricted areas, damage, leaks, or potential security concerns to the appropriate supervisor.

Light Maintenance / Unit Support

  • Assist with unit turns and apartment preparation for new residents.
  • Perform light maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, air filters, blinds, fixtures, and basic hardware.
  • Assist with basic plumbing, electrical, painting, patching, and general repair needs as directed.
  • Safely use hand tools such as drills, wrenches, screwdrivers, and related tools for routine maintenance tasks.
  • Help the maintenance team with all-hands-on-deck work when needed, including moving items, trash-outs, grounds work, and basic work orders.

Requirements:

  • Prior porter, janitorial, custodial, groundskeeping, maintenance, handyperson, or building upkeep experience preferred.
  • Ability to perform physical, hands-on work throughout the day.
  • Basic understanding of safety hazards and proper use of cleaning/sanitizing solutions.
  • Ability to safely use cleaning equipment, including buffers, floor machines, and industrial vacuums.
  • Ability to perform basic repairs and safely use common hand tools.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Good communication skills and polite, professional demeanor with residents, staff, and visitors.
  • Flexibility to work different shifts/hours as needed.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Due to the physical nature of the role, must be able to stand for long periods, lift, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
