What is a temporary non linear video editor?

A Temporary Non Linear Video Editor is a professional who is hired for a short-term period to edit video content using non-linear editing (NLE) software. Unlike traditional linear editing, non-linear editing allows editors to access any frame in a digital video clip regardless of sequence, making the process more flexible and efficient. These editors typically work on projects such as commercials, TV shows, films, or social media content, and their contracts usually last for the duration of a specific project or a set timeframe. They are skilled in using software like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or Avid Media Composer. Temporary roles may be offered by production companies, broadcasting studios, or freelance opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary non linear video editor?

To thrive as a Temporary Non Linear Video Editor, you need expertise in video editing, storytelling, and a strong grasp of timing and visual composition, typically supported by a degree in film, media, or relevant experience. Mastery of industry-standard non-linear editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or Avid Media Composer is essential, and familiarity with audio editing tools and color grading systems is often required. Attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to collaborate under tight deadlines are crucial soft skills for success. These abilities ensure the delivery of high-quality, engaging content that meets client specifications and project timelines.

What are some common challenges temporary non linear video editors face when joining new projects or teams?

Temporary non linear video editors often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to different workflows, software versions, and project organization styles set by various teams. Each production may have unique asset management systems, naming conventions, or editorial preferences that require fast learning and flexibility. Additionally, building rapport with new collaborators, such as producers and sound designers, is important to ensure smooth communication and feedback cycles, even within tight deadlines. Embracing adaptability and strong organizational skills can help editors succeed across diverse assignments.

Job description

OVERVIEW OF THE COMPANY
Fox TV Stations
FOX Television Stations owns and operates 29 full power broadcast television stations in the U.S. These include stations located in 14 of the top 15 largest designated market areas, or DMAs, and duopolies in 11 DMAs, including the three largest DMAs (New York, Los Angeles and Chicago). Of these stations, 18 are affiliated with the FOX Network. In addition to distributing sports, entertainment and syndicated content, our television stations collectively produce approximately 1,200 hours of local news every week. These stations leverage viewer, distributor and advertiser demand for the FOX Network's national content.
JOB DESCRIPTION
In a major market newsroom, pacing, accuracy, and visual impact are everything. We are seeking a talented, fast-paced News Editor (Per Diem) to shape the visual narrative of our daily broadcasts and streaming content.
Working as a per diem crew member, you will collaborate closely with Newscast Producers and the Digital Team to transform raw footage into compelling, clean, and high-impact news sequences under intense deadline pressure.
The Role: What You'll Do
You will be a key player in our control room and editing bays, ensuring our visual storytelling is seamless across all platforms.
  • High-Speed Editing: Cut and prepare video sequences for broadcast and streaming platforms on tight, live-television deadlines.
  • Script Integration: Update iNews scripts with precise running times and cue markers for on-air graphics.
  • Editorial Quality Control: Maintain absolute accuracy by auditing scripts against edited video and immediately alerting producers and writers to any discrepancies.
  • Digital & Social Collaboration: Identify, clip, and optimize compelling video elements tailored specifically for digital and social media publication.
  • Long-Form & Features: Edit special reports, sweeps pieces, and other long-form content as assigned.
  • Workflow Support: Assist the Editing Coordinator with feed intake, archival video restoration, and "rundown checks" to ensure every asset is online before hit-time.
  • Leadership & Tech Agility: Step in as the Editing Coordinator when needed, operate ENG Receive equipment, and manage video/audio switching gear to support live streaming initiatives.

What You Bring to the Table
We are looking for an editor who treats a timeline like an art form and a deadline like a mission.
  • The Editing Edge: Demonstrated mastery of non-linear video editing software within a high-pressure, daily news environment.
  • Digital Organization: Exceptional digital file management and structural organization skills.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills to effectively coordinate with producers, writers, and technical staff during breaking news.
  • Platform Literacy: Familiarity with social media video formats, clipping workflows, and modern digital platforms.
  • Operational Agility: A flexible, proactive mindset ready to adapt to shifting newsroom priorities and evolving broadcast technologies.

Education & Experience
  • Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a news video editor at a commercial television station is preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university is preferred.
  • Systems: Ability to quickly master the station's newsroom computer system (iNews) and clipping software post-hire.

Why Join Our Roster?
Per diem roles at our station place you directly in the center of a Top 10 market environment, working with top-tier journalists and state-of-the-art production tools. It's an exceptional opportunity to showcase your skills, keep your reel sharp, and build a footprint in a premier newsroom.
We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, gender identity, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. We will consider for employment qualified applicants with criminal histories consistent with applicable law.
Pursuant to state and local pay disclosure requirements, the pay rate/range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on education, skills, experience, and location is $20.00 per hour.
