Can a non-citizen be a police officer in the USA?

In the USA, most police departments require officers to be U.S. citizens, though some agencies may consider lawful permanent residents (green card holders) for certain positions. Non-citizens generally cannot become police officers unless they have specific legal status and meet department requirements, which often include background checks and training certifications.
