Summary of position:
A Medical Scribes duties include performing all clerical and information technology functions for a physician in a clinic setting. This includes primary responsibility of the operation of the electronic health records and electronic dictation system. You also must be able to anticipate what the physician needs to facilitate the flow of the clinic. Medical Scribes must be discreet, tactful, and modest in performance of duties so as not to distract medical staff from patient care.
TEMPORARY POSITION- UP TO 90 DAYS WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF EXTENSTION OR CHANGE IN CLASSIFICATION.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Typical responsibilities and duties of the Medical Scribe include, but are not limited to:
- Accurately and thoroughly document medical visits and procedures as they are being performed by the physician, including but not limited to:
- Patient medical history and physical exam,
- Procedures and treatments performed by healthcare professionals, including nurses and physician assistants.
- Patient education and explanations of risks and benefits.
- Physician-dictated diagnoses, prescriptions and instructions for patient or family members for self-care and follow-up
- Prepare referral letters as directed by the physician
- Spot mistakes or inconsistencies in medical documentation and check to correct the information in order to reduce errors
- Proofread and edit all the physician’s medical documents for accuracy, spelling, punctuation, and grammar
- Collect, organize and catalog data for physician quality reporting system and other quality improvement efforts and format for submission
- Must comply with HIPAA confidentiality standards when accessing or communicating patient information
- Have organizational skills with focus on tracking patient care and improving patient flow
- Use professional demeanor and recognize privacy considerations for patients and families with governing HIPAA regulations
- Other duties as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED required. Six months’ experience as a Medical Scribe or six months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience required. One year typing experience. One-year medical terminology experience. Completion of a medical terminology course or one-year medical terminology experience in a clinical setting. Current BLS certification. Have a firm understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, pharmacology, and treatment assessments to the extent required to understand and accurately transcribe dictated reports. Translate medical abbreviations into their expanded forms. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and good at spelling, punctuation, grammar, and oral communication. Must be able to listen to complex medical information and summarize in a clear, complete, and concise fashion. Must type at least 45 WPM.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.
- Must be able to hear staff on the phone and those who are served in person, and speak clearly in order to communicate information to staff and others
- Must have vision ability that includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus which is adequate to read memos, a computer screen, forms and other personnel documents
- Must have high manual dexterity
- Must be able to reach above the shoulder level to work, bend, squat and sit, stand, stoop, crouching, reaching, kneeling and twisting/turning
Universal Requirements:
Pre-employment requirements include I-9, positive background and reference check results, complete application, new hire orientation, drug screening and completion of employee health screening.
