Job description
The instructor is responsible for providing regular instruction, developing and updating courses taught in classroom, lab, online, and distance-learning environments, and may also teach in other locations, including the Prison Education Program (PEP).
Teaching assignments include, but are not limited to, National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements for residential and commercial applications; programming and installation of programmable logic controllers (PLCs); industrial communications and electronics; robotics and integrated automation; and installation and maintenance of electric motors and motor starters.
Beyond day-to-day instruction, this position will help grow and evolve the program by developing and updating curriculum, maintaining modern lab spaces and equipment, and implementing innovative teaching strategies for both high school and college students. Serving as a mentor and advisor to students, tracking their progress, and collaborating closely with the program team and SCC campus teams to ensure student success. This is a full-time temporary position with an expected end date of December 31st, 2026, with the possibility of extension through May 2027.
- Deliver hands-on, high-impact instruction to a diverse group of students preparing for careers in electrical and automation fields.
- Teach foundational and advanced electrical concepts, including residential and commercial wiring, industrial controls, and automation systems.
- Bring modern industry into the classroom with PLC programming, robotics, integrated automation, CAD concepts, and electrical systems integration.
- Instill a safety-first mindset, including National Electrical Code (NEC) standards, Hazard Communication, and Right-to-Know requirements.
- Design lessons, projects, and assessments that keep students engaged, challenged, and career-ready.
- Build engaging presentations, demonstrations, and digital learning tools.
- Leverage multimedia, simulations, and real-world applications to connect theory to practice.
- Continuously refresh instructional materials to reflect current electrical and automation industry standards.
- Help develop new courses and ensure the existing curriculum aligns with industry expectations and workforce needs.
- Collaborate with industry partners, the Workforce Leadership Team (WLT), and program faculty.
- Translate real-world electrical and automation trends into meaningful, hands-on learning experiences.
- Maintain modern electrical and automation labs, equipment, and tools in a safe, organized, and ready-to-use condition.
- Assist with selecting and purchasing materials, components, and equipment to keep the program industry-relevant and cutting-edge.
- Guide students through their academic journey-from foundational skills to career readiness in the electrical and automation fields.
- Monitor progress, provide meaningful feedback, and support student growth and achievement.
- Serve as a trusted mentor and advocate for student success.
- Participate in professional development, industry certifications, conferences, and ongoing training.
- Continuously strengthen technical skills to stay current with evolving electrical systems and automation technologies.
- Engage in campus events, recruitment efforts, and program initiatives that promote career and technical education.

Promote a Culture of Belonging
- Act as a technical advisor for the Electrical & Electromechanical Technology Program and collaborate with other college divisions to support high-quality instruction and ensure alignment with college policies and procedures.
- Teach evening Continuing Education (CE), off-campus courses, or customized training programs in electrical and automation topics to meet workforce and community needs.
- Contribute to projects, programs, and activities across the College, TCA, division, and program as needed.
- Be prepared to support instruction or program needs across multiple campuses, locations, and schedules, including varied days, hours, and shifts.
- Take on additional duties and responsibilities that support student success, program quality, and overall College excellence.
- May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.

- Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge and hands-on experience in Electrical & Electromechanical Technology and automation systems.
- Apply industry practices, including electrical theory, National Electrical Code (NEC) standards, industrial controls, and system troubleshooting.
- Install, operate, and maintain programmable logic controllers (PLCs), industrial control systems, motors, motor starters, and automation components.
- Instruct students in safe and accurate operation of electrical systems, tools, and testing equipment.
- Utilize technical resources such as electrical codes, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and industry reference materials.
- Maintain a safe, structured, and productive learning environment in both classroom and lab settings.
- Foster positive, professional relationships with students, colleagues, and administrators.
- Deliver instruction to a diverse student population using clear and effective oral and written communication skills.
- Organize and present course materials in a logical, timely, and engaging manner across classroom, lab, online, and hybrid formats.
- Effectively utilize learning management systems (LMS) and instructional technologies to support student learning.

- Ability to stand for extended periods (2-4 hours) while supervising labs or instruction.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Working knowledge of PC applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, PLC programming software, and electrical design tools-or willingness to develop these skills within two (2) years of employment.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the phone.
- Ability to use basic computer skills.
- Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds for short distances and move tables, chairs, and media equipment when necessary.

- AAS Degree in Electrical & Electromechanical Technology or a directly related field and 2 years of current work experience in relate field
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical & Electromechanical Technology or a directly related field
- Journeyman Electrical License and an Electrical certificate
- Ten years of relevant work experience and the ability to complete AAS within 2 years of hire
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical & Electromechanical Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, or a related field.
- Prior teaching, training, or mentoring experience in a technical, secondary, or post-secondary education setting.
- Advanced experience with PLC programming, industrial automation systems, and control systems integration.
- Knowledge of robotics, mechatronics, and integrated automation systems.
- Experience working with National Electrical Code (NEC) standards in residential, commercial, or industrial applications.
- Familiarity with curriculum development, competency-based instruction, and industry-aligned training programs.
