Position Summary:
Department: Grounds Maintenance
Employment Type: Seasonal / Temporary (Summer) Up to 6 Months
Schedule: Full-time/ 40 hours per week
Reports To: Full-Time Landscape Technician / Supervisor
SALARY: $17.00/Hr
Hours of Operation:
Summer hours 6:00am to 2:30pm (May - August)
Fall hours: Monday -Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm (August 31-December)
Position Summary:
Temporary Campus Landscape maintenance supports the Grounds Maintenance team in maintaining the appearance, safety, and functionality of campus landscapes. Working alongside experienced full-time grounds staff, this position performs hands-on outdoor labor using hand tools, landscaping equipment, and general maintenance practices. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, collaborating as part of a team, and learning new landscaping and grounds maintenance skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
Works under the direction of a full-time Landscape Technician or Grounds Supervisor.
Operates grounds maintenance equipment such as walk-behind and riding mowers, string trimmers, edgers, utility carts, and other tools necessary to maintain lawns and landscaped areas.
Performs guided pruning of shrubs, grasses, trees, and ornamental plants using handheld pruners, loppers, and saws.
Assists with the installation of new landscape materials, including planting grass, shrubs, flowers, and trees.
Performs routine hand weeding, mulching, and shrub bed maintenance.
Completes outdoor maintenance tasks such as trash removal, storm drain cleaning, power washing, gutter cleaning, and other duties as assigned.
Prepares outdoor spaces for special events.
Follows all safety procedures and equipment operation guidelines while working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Works collaboratively with grounds staff and supervisors and demonstrates a positive and professional attitude.
Demonstrates a willingness to learn new skills, techniques, and procedures related to grounds and landscape maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications
Previous experience with mowing, trimming, gardening, irrigation or working outside is a plus.
Ability to use basic hand tools and willingness to learn operation of landscaping equipment.
Ability to perform physical labor including lifting, bending, walking, and standing for extended periods.
Dependable, punctual, and able to follow directions and safety guidelines.
Willingness to learn and work collaboratively as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
Interest in learning skills related to grounds, landscaping, or horticulture.
Working Conditions
Primarily outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
Physical labor requiring lifting, pushing, pulling, and repetitive movements.
Use of power equipment and hand tools with appropriate training and supervision.

Full-time employees are eligible to receive tuition waiver benefits, as well as dependents and spouses of UNC Employees who are employed at 0.5 FTE or above are eligible for undergraduate dependent tuition grants of up to 50%.
