Overview
Kaiser Permanente is seeking an experienced Patient Safety Officer (RN) to lead patient safety initiatives and foster a culture of clinical excellence and continuous improvement at the Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Downey, CA-a Level III Trauma and Stroke-Certified Center with 350-400 beds. This role demands a clinically strong RN with recent acute care experience and proven leadership in patient safety and risk reduction.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead patient safety programs and initiatives in alignment with hospital and regional standards.
  • Conduct comprehensive medical chart reviews to assess patient safety events, risks, and improvement opportunities.
  • Drive and oversee root cause analyses, event investigations, and corrective action planning.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Nursing, Quality, Risk Management, and Medical Staff to strengthen patient safety outcomes.
  • Provide guidance and serve as the subject-matter expert in patient safety practices, California regulatory reporting, and performance improvement processes.
  • Act as interim leader in the Director of Risk role when needed.
Must-Have Qualifications
  • Active RN license in the state of California.
  • Recent leadership experience (with or without direct reports) in Patient Safety within an acute care hospital setting.
  • Strong clinical background in Adult Critical Care, ICU, ED, or Med-Surg.
  • Ability to perform chart reviews and assess potential safety or risk issues with sound clinical judgment.
  • Minimum 5 years of acute care RN experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Formal Patient Safety Officer training or certification (e.g., ASHRM).
  • Experience in a Magnet-designated hospital environment.
  • Familiarity with TEAMSTEPPS, root cause analysis, cause mapping, and California reporting regulations.
  • Strong operational understanding of hospital safety committees and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Experience with Level III Trauma or Stroke Center operations is highly desirable.
