Job description

TekPro Support Services (TSS) is seeking Hazmat Specialists who will be responsible for ensuring the safe handling, packaging, and delivery of hazardous materials (hazmat) received in the mailroom. The Specialist will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with federal regulations, company policies, and procedures related to the handling of hazmat. Under general supervision, coordinates projects involving hazardous chemical waste and other chemical safety issues. Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal regulatory agencies and university policies and procedures. Conducts training programs in area of specialty. This role requires a Top Secret Clearance

What You'll Do:

Responsibilities include, with limited supervision, but not limited to:

  • Package, wrap, and ship materials in accordance with FBI policies and procedures
  • Receive and inspect all incoming packages to identify and segregate those containing hazardous materials
  • Ensure proper packaging, labeling, and documentation for all hazmat shipments in accordance with federal regulations
  • Conduct hazard assessments and determine appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for handling hazardous materials
  • Coordinate with other departments and external service providers to ensure timely and safe delivery of hazardous materials
  • Maintain inventory of hazmat materials, monitor usage and reorder when necessary
  • Develop and maintain procedures for handling and disposing of hazardous materials, including spill response and emergency procedures
  • Provide training and guidance to mailroom staff on proper handling and storage of hazardous materials 
  • Conduct routine inspections of the mailroom to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures related to hazardous materials handling
  • Maintain all necessary records and documentation in accordance with federal regulations and company policies
  • Work with regulatory agencies as needed to maintain compliance with hazardous materials regulations.
  • Inspects mail/packages for compliance with environmental health and safety regulations; advises users of the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Identifies other chemically contaminated items for sampling, testing, removal, decontamination, and disposal.
  • Coordinates the disposal hazardous materials.
  • Develops and conducts new employee training programs in the areas of infectious wastes, hazard communication, asbestos, poly-chlorinated biphenyls, and other hazardous substances.
  • Advises management on potential hazardous materials and makes recommendations as required.
  • Maintains records such as hazardous and non-hazardous waste manifests and associated documents.
  • Responds to hazardous materials spills such as oil, acid, and mercury; implements clean-up plan
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

What You Bring:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in hazardous materials handling, shipping, or receiving
  • Knowledge of federal regulations related to the handling and transport of hazardous materials (e.g. OSHA, DOT, EPA)
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify potential hazards
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively train and communicate with staff at all levels
  • Ability to wear appropriate PPE for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Knowledge of transport and disposal procedures for safe handling of hazardous chemicals and/or radioactive materials
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
  • Knowledge of transport and disposal procedures for safe handling of toxic gases, infectious materials, asbestos, PCBs, and other hazardous substances
  • Skill in performing safety inspections and ensuring compliance with OSHA safety standards
  • Ability to develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols.
  • Knowledge of chemical, hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, and/or environmental health standards
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures
  • Skill in developing and conducting employee information/orientation sessions.
  • Skill in developing safety procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to operate, test and/or repair monitoring, sampling and/or analytical equipment and instruments
  •  Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Currently qualified through DOT or FedEx to ship hazardous materials
  • 3+ years’ experience shipping/receiving hazardous materials
  • Exceedingly high level of accuracy, organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Excellent math/calculation skills & computer literacy
  • Extensive experience with 49 CFR parts 100-185 (Hazardous Materials Regulations as required by Department of Transportation)
