What is a temporary Epic Analyst?

A Temporary Epic Analyst is a healthcare IT professional hired on a short-term basis to support, configure, and optimize the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system within a healthcare organization. Their duties often include analyzing workflows, troubleshooting technical issues, training staff, and assisting with system upgrades or new module implementations. Temporary Epic Analysts typically possess Epic certification and strong analytical skills. They play a crucial role during periods of transition, such as software upgrades, large-scale implementations, or when there is a temporary increase in workload. These positions are usually contract-based and may last for several weeks or months depending on project needs.

What are some common challenges faced by temporary Epic Analysts when joining a new healthcare organization?

Temporary Epic Analysts often encounter the challenge of quickly adapting to unfamiliar workflows, organization-specific customizations, and unique team dynamics. Since the role is project-based and time-limited, there's a need to rapidly learn local protocols, build relationships with end-users, and deliver results within tight deadlines. Successful analysts proactively communicate, seek clarification, and leverage their prior Epic experience to bridge gaps and ensure a smooth transition for the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary Epic Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Epic Analyst, you need a solid background in healthcare IT, knowledge of clinical workflows, and typically an Epic certification in a relevant module. Experience with Epic systems, electronic health record (EHR) configuration, and troubleshooting tools is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with end users and project teams. These competencies ensure the smooth implementation, optimization, and support of Epic systems, directly impacting clinical efficiency and patient care quality.

  • Apply HL7 DaVinci Implementation Guides (PAS, CRD, DTR) to support prior authorization and coverage workflows

  • Perform terminology mapping using standard code systems (SNOMED, LOINC, RxNorm, ICD10)

  • Identify and resolve complex data quality, mapping, and performance issues across integrations

  • Validate FHIR payloads using conformance and testing tools and support integration and UAT testing

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship on FHIR standards, best practices, and implementation approaches

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Healthcare Informatics or a related field, or equivalent, and typically requires 7+ years of experience in healthcare data analysis, integration, and mapping

  • Hands-on expertise with HL7 FHIR R4, including resources, profiles, bundles, and extensions

  • Experience mapping from HL7 v2, CCDA, X12, and/or proprietary EMR formats to FHIR

  • Experience mapping from HL7 v2, CCDA, X12, and/or proprietary EMR formats to FHIR

  • Working knowledge of Clinical Quality Language (CQL), including use within DaVinci DTR workflows

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and written/verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fastpaced, crossfunctional environment

Preferred Skills / Experience:

  • Direct experience implementing HL7 DaVinci Implementation Guides (PAS, CRD, and/or DTR)

  • Experience supporting CMS interoperability and prior authorization initiatives (e.g., CMS0057)

  • Experience working with major EHR platforms such as Epic or Cerner

  • Familiarity with CDS Hooks in CRD/DTR workflows

  • Experience working with FHIR servers (e.g., Azure Health Data Services, HAPI FHIR, Epic/Cerner endpoints)

  • Exposure to FHIR validation and testing tools such as HL7 validators or Touchstone

  • Experience leading or significantly contributing to enterpriselevel FHIR implementations
