As a part of a strategic partnership with the City of Ypsilanti, Washtenaw Community College provides programming to youth and adults at the Parkridge Community Center. WCC will host its annual Parkridge Summer Camp, a 5-week Summer Learning Experience for up to 48 students. This experience will consist of in-person academic and enrichment programming for youth, 6-12 years old. Our team of educators, staff, students and volunteers will engage participants in a variety of academic skill building and enrichment activities. The goal is to increase each child's learning capacity by improving their academic, social and technology skills.
The Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for leading and implementing engaging and fun activities for youth ages 6-12, in a small group setting. They will also be responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in his/her group. The Summer Camp Counselor will provide high quality indoor/outdoor educational and recreational experiences for youth. This is a temporary position that runs from late June through early August. Summer camp programming operates Monday - Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm. The position location is at Parkridge Community Center in Ypsilanti.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
• Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature, songs, games, opening and closing ceremonies, swimming, etc. This includes time spent on the bus;
• Accompany campers along with staff on field trips;
• Collaborate with fellow Counselors and Camp leadership to plan creative program activities;
• Serving as an assistant during morning class times;
• Identify and respond to camper behavior issues;
• Ensure that identified camp spaces are kept clean, organized, and free of trash;
• Communicate with parents about participant's experiences and report concerns to camp leadership;
• Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance;
• Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program;
• Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers' safety and their whereabouts at all times;
• Utilize technology, including AI-enabled tools and software where appropriate, to support the effective performance of assigned duties, enhance productivity, improve communication and information management, support decision-making, and other responsibilities, while ensuring compliance with confidentiality requirements, institutional policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
• Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of Parkridge Community Center.
Hours/Schedule:

• Must be at least 18 years old
• Familiar with Microsoft office programs
• Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.
• Must be able to pass a thorough background check.
• Ability to use workplace technology relevant to the position, including the capacity to learn and appropriately leverage emerging AI-supported tools. Ability to assess the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated content, maintain confidentiality, and apply sound judgment and ethical practices in the use of technology.
