Job description

Job Title: Medical Scribe

Job Description

The Medical Scribe accurately documents physician–patient encounters in the electronic medical record (EMR) while supporting multiple physicians in a high-volume retina clinic. This role plays a key part in delivering efficient patient care by ensuring timely, detailed, and accurate medical documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Document physician visits in the EMR system in real time, capturing accurate and thorough medical information during each patient encounter.
  • Scribe for multiple physicians, adapting to individual documentation styles and preferences while maintaining consistency and quality.
  • Record patient histories, exam findings, assessments, and treatment plans as directed by the physician.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of all medical documentation, including medical terminology, diagnoses, and procedures.
  • Support a high volume of patient care, assisting physicians in managing a clinic that may see 80–100 patients per day.
  • Perform precise data entry related to ophthalmology and retina care, following clinic protocols and EMR standards.
  • Collaborate closely with clinic staff and a team of other scribes to support efficient clinic flow and patient throughput.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all healthcare documentation and privacy standards.
  • Participate in training at the administrative facility and apply learned procedures and workflows in the clinic setting.
  • Travel between assigned clinics as a float scribe, providing consistent documentation support across multiple locations.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in a life science field.
  • 1+ years of on-site medical scribing experience; remote scribing experience does not qualify.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, with the ability to apply it accurately in documentation.
  • Experience in patient care within a healthcare environment.
  • Fast and accurate typing skills suitable for real-time documentation.
  • Ability to work effectively in an extremely fast-paced, high-volume clinical setting.
  • Strong multitasking skills to manage documentation for multiple physicians and numerous patients each day.
  • High level of energy and drive, with a proactive, goal-oriented work style.
  • Excellent attention to detail to ensure precise medical documentation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Ophthalmic or retina clinic experience is preferred.
  • Experience or coursework in medical assisting or related healthcare fields is beneficial.
  • Experience with medical documentation and data entry in a clinical environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a high-volume patient care setting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with physicians and a large clinical team.
  • Motivated, “Type A” personality with a desire for professional growth, including potential progression into clinical research.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning, supported by access to continued education funding.

Work Environment

This position is full-time, Monday through Friday, with schedules falling between approximately 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., depending on clinic needs. Actual start and end times vary, and early or late shifts are uncommon unless the clinic is extremely busy. The role functions as a float position supporting multiple retina clinics, with a home clinic in a very busy location that can see 100+ patients per day and additional support provided to nearby clinics. Travel between clinics occurs about three days per week, with transportation provided and travel time paid. On rare occasions, you may be asked to support a clinic outside your usual three locations, with mileage reimbursed when traveling beyond your regular clinics. Training takes place at an administrative building in a central business district, after which you will work as part of a team of 8–24 clinical staff members per physician. The environment is extremely fast paced, with exposure to advanced ophthalmology and retina care, as well as high-level clinical research activity that offers potential career progression. The dress code requires navy blue scrubs, short and well-groomed nails, and hair securely tied back to maintain a professional and safe clinical appearance
