Temporary Editorial information

What is a temporary editorial?

Temporary editorial jobs are short-term positions within publishing, media, or content-focused companies. These roles can include copyediting, proofreading, fact-checking, or assisting with content production on a freelance or contract basis. Temporary editorial staff are often hired to help meet deadlines, cover staff absences, or manage increased workloads for specific projects. These positions are ideal for individuals looking to gain experience in the editorial field or seeking flexible work arrangements. Assignments can range from a few weeks to several months, depending on the employer's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary editorial professional?

To thrive as a Temporary Editorial professional, you need excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), style guides (like AP or Chicago), and editing tools such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and the ability to quickly adapt to new topics or team environments are standout soft skills. These abilities ensure high-quality content production and enable seamless integration into fast-paced editorial teams on a temporary basis.

What are the most common challenges faced in a temporary editorial role, and how can I best prepare for them?

In a temporary editorial position, one of the main challenges is quickly adapting to the publication's style, workflow, and content management systems with minimal onboarding time. Temporary editors often need to handle tight deadlines, shifting priorities, and unfamiliar subject matter, requiring strong organizational skills and adaptability. To succeed, it's helpful to familiarize yourself with the publication’s recent work, stay open to feedback, and maintain clear communication with team members. Proactiveness and flexibility are highly valued in these fast-paced environments.

About the Opportunity

We are recruiting for a Temporary Editor to support the Communications & Marketing team of a highly respected local organization. This is an excellent short-term opportunity for an experienced editor, communications professional, or writer/editor who enjoys polishing content, catching the details others miss, and helping organizations communicate clearly and consistently.

The position is approximately 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Morning availability is strongly preferred, ideally 8:30 AM–12:00/12:30 PM, although some flexibility may be available.

This position can be fully remote, provided you are consistently available and responsive during your scheduled hours. For candidates who prefer an office environment, onsite workspace is also available.

The assignment is expected to last approximately one month, with an anticipated start between mid-September and early October to allow time for training and onboarding.

What You'll Be Doing

The primary focus of this position is copy editing and proofreading, rather than creating large amounts of original content. You will serve as an editorial resource for a variety of internal and external communications, including:

  • Copy editing and proofreading written materials
  • Reviewing content for grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity, and consistency
  • Fact-checking information prior to publication
  • Editing content to align with established AP Style and organizational editorial guidelines
  • Reviewing voice and tone while maintaining the writer's original intent
  • Editing announcements, website copy, feature stories, newsletters, internal communications, talking points, and other materials
  • Providing constructive editorial feedback and guidance to writers
  • Managing both quick-turn requests and larger projects with longer deadlines

What We're Looking For

  • 3+ years of professional editing, copy-editing, writing, journalism, communications, or similar experience
  • Strong professional proofreading and copy-editing skills
  • Working knowledge of AP Style
  • Experience working within established editorial or organizational style guidelines
  • Ability to edit for voice, tone, clarity, accuracy, grammar, and consistency
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments
  • Comfortable working with quick deadlines and time-sensitive content
  • Strong communication skills and ability to provide thoughtful editorial feedback

Experience within higher education, journalism, media, communications, marketing, PR, nonprofit, government, or another organization serving multiple audiences may translate especially well.
