We are seeking a Drafter under the Temporary Professional Staffing Services contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs. This project will provide professional staffing services to the Medical and Engineering Department's capabilities at the Long Beach Veterans Affairs Healthcare System (LBVAHCS). Positions will be assigned to specific sections within the department, including Capital Development, Projects & Construction, Business Management, and Maintenance & Operations, and report to the respective Section Supervisor in support of medical center tasks. The position is on-site, 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day, based at the LBVAHCS, located at 5901 E. 7th Street, Long Beach, CA 90822.

So, what will the Drafter at Terrestris do?

The Drafter works with the Engineering Service, Projects Section, reporting ultimately to the Chief of Projects & Construction Management. The Drafter supports and assists the Contracted Temporary Staff Architect in developing deadlines, overall objectives, available resources, and the tasks necessary to complete the work. The Drafter is responsible for assisting the Contracted Temporary Staff Architect with site documentation of campus buildings and all utilities into AutoCAD, Revit, and ZLink format. The Contracted Temporary Staff Architect reviews the completed work to assess its effectiveness in meeting all requirements.

What does a typical day look like for a Drafter?

You will:

  • Assist architects in developing drafting solutions for campus facilities and varied spaces.
  • Prepare detailed AutoCAD and Revit drawings, plans, elevations, and visual presentations.
  • Analyze architectural drawings and develop furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E) layouts aligned with building systems.
  • Interpret plans for compliance with VA standards, codes, and specifications.
  • Maintain drawing room, documentation, and project records for design and construction.
  • Update and manage drawing files in AutoCAD, Revit, and ZLink systems.
  • Identify inaccuracies in drawings and coordinate corrections with architects and leadership.
  • Document space changes after moves or construction and update design files accordingly.
  • Support administrative tasks, including scheduling, move plans, and project meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with accessibility, safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders and assist in maintaining documentation schedules.

What qualifications do you look for?

You might be the professional we're looking for if you

have:

  • Authorization to permanently work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Minimum of five (5) years' Commercial Drafting experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree OR 8-10 years of related experience (in lieu of Bachelor's Degree).
  • Possess an associate's degree in engineering Drafting or a bachelor's degree.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of healthcare design and the understanding of fire codes, life safety codes, building codes, barrier-free design, systems, composed cleaning and maintenance concepts, ergonomics, and safety criteria.
  • Ability to review and interpret blueprints and specifications. Drafting assignments require comprehension of the detailed characteristics of item being designed and association with accepted design practices.
  • Skilled in free-form drawing and drawing to scale when on a job site, measuring for a project.
  • Expertise with recommendations for the selection, specification, procurement, and placement of furnishings.
  • Three (3) years of AutoCAD, 3 years of Revit, and 1 year of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint & Outlook).
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally with a variety of contractors, management officials, vendors, Contracting Officers at Long Beach staff, and meet stated deadlines.

We will be extra impressed if you have:

  • Certifications such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Project & Microsoft Teams.
