About the Opportunity

This is atemporary 20-hours-per-week position supporting student-athletes throughout the academic year (September-May). This role is not eligible for benefits.

Job Summary:

The Student-Athlete Support Counselor provides direct clinical care and support to Northeastern University student-athletes through University Health and Counseling Services (UHCS) and Athletics. This on-site role includes one evening shift per week and involves brief psychological assessments, short-term psychotherapy, follow-up appointments, and triage support as needed. The counselor also makes referrals for ongoing community-based counseling, psychopharmacological evaluations, and emergency mental health services when appropriate.

The Student-Athlete Support Counselor consults regularly with Northeastern's full-time Student Athlete Support Clinician, members of the Athletics community, including athletic trainers and coaches, to support student-athlete wellbeing, and coordinates as needed with the UHCS mental health team.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in social work, Psychology, Counseling, or related field required; current licensure or eligibility for licensure (e.g., LICSW, LMHC, PhD/PsyD).
  • Experience in an intercollegiate and/or professional sport setting is required.
  • Experience providing brief, evidence-based psychotherapy to young adults in a university counseling center or similar setting.
  • Demonstrated competency in trauma-informed assessment and intervention, including crisis evaluation, safety planning, and referral to higher levels of care.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary campus environment, including Athletics, medical, academic, and community partners.
  • Commitment to culturally responsive, anti-oppressive practice, including experience working with marginalized and underrepresented student populations and fostering inclusion and belonging.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including clinical documentation consistent with professional and ethical standards.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion, including experience supporting underserved, international, and first-generation college students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active independent licensure (e.g., LICSW, LMHC, Psychologist) in the state.
  • Experience working in a college or university counseling center using a brief therapy model.
  • Specialized experience or training in crisis intervention and in areas such as trauma, alcohol/substance use, or eating disorders.
  • Experience providing outreach, psychoeducation, and/or group therapy to diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion, including experience supporting underserved, international, and first-generation college students.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills and experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
