About the Role The Street Equipment Operator performs skilled work operating light, medium, and heavy construction equipment in support of the maintenance, repair, and construction of Town streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, and related infrastructure.

Responsibilities include operating equipment such as forklifts, loaders, and skid steers; performing street and drainage maintenance; and assisting with snow and ice control operations. Employees also support traffic control, pedestrian safety, and crowd management efforts during Town-sponsored festivals, parades, community events, and roadway projects. Duties may include the installation and removal of barricades, temporary signage, traffic control devices, and other safety equipment.

When not operating equipment, employees work as part of a crew performing street maintenance and construction activities, preventative equipment maintenance, and related public works duties. The position requires responding to after-hours call-backs as needed and supporting emergency operations during adverse weather events. Schedule: This position is regularly scheduled to work Friday through Monday and supports weekend operations and special events as needed.

Duties and Responsibilites Operate a variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment, including motor graders, loaders, backhoes, asphalt pavers, track loaders, excavators, skid steers, and related equipment Operate backhoes and excavators to remove asphalt, sidewalks, curb and gutter sections, and other infrastructure for repair and reconstruction projects Perform grading, trenching, excavation, drainage improvements, and material handling operations Load, transport, and unload construction materials, equipment, and supplies Operate equipment safely in active traffic areas, around underground utilities, pedestrians, and other confined work environments Assist with asphalt paving, pothole repairs, utility cut restoration, and roadway maintenance projects Construct and repair sidewalks, curb and gutter, drainage structures, catch basins, and stormwater infrastructure Clean and maintain drainage systems, culverts, and catch basins Perform mowing, trimming, vegetation management, and landscaping along roadways, rights-of-way, and other public properties Establish and maintain safe work zones through the installation of traffic control devices, including cones, barricades, barriers, signage, and other safety equipment Perform flagging duties and assist with traffic management during construction and maintenance activities Assist with crowd control and pedestrian safety measures during festivals, parades, community events, and other public gatherings Assist with the setup and breakdown of Town-sponsored special events, including installing and removing temporary traffic control and safety equipment Participate in snow and ice removal operations using heavy equipment and manual labor as needed Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, cleaning, and minor repairs on assigned equipment Ensure equipment is maintained in safe operating condition and report repair needs promptly May assist with training new employees in equipment operation, safety procedures, and work practices May serve as crew leader in the absence of higher-level supervision Perform other related duties as assigned Minimum Education and Experience High School Diploma or GED Three (3) to five (5) years of experience operating heavy construction or maintenance equipment related to street maintenance, public works, utility construction, or similar field, including some construction experience; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience Special Requirements Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver's License Ability to operate a variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment safely and effectively Ability to work on-call and respond to after-hours emergencies, weather events, and operational needs as required Ability to obtain and maintain certifications required for assigned duties Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding work Subject to after-hours call-back, emergency response assignments, and snow and ice control operations The Town of Mooresville is an Equal Opportunity Employer and values diversity at all levels of the workforce.
