Job description
Adjunct Teaching Position
Mathematics Department
School of Natural Sciences
The Mathematics Department routinely hires adjunct faculty to fill curricular needs on a part-time basis and maintains a pool of candidates for temporary part-time positions as the need arises. This position is continuously open and qualified persons will be selected to teach face-to-face undergraduate courses (College Algebra, Math for Business, Precalculus, Quantitative Reasoning, and the Corequisite Support Courses associated with each of these) as the need arises. Appointments are generally made on a semester-by-semester basis. Positions are renewable, contingent upon need and performance.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. or Master's degree in Mathematics is required. An advanced degree in mathematics education or a related field will be considered if the application clearly documents at least 18 graduate credit hours in graduate-level mathematics courses. This requirement may be waived for adjuncts teaching only corequisite math support classes.
- Demonstrated potential for excellence in classroom teaching.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Facility in online communication via email, learning management systems, and online homework platforms.
- Successful completion of an employment and/or criminal history background check required.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include teaching face-to-face sections of College Algebra, Math for Business, Precalculus, Quantitative Reasoning, and/or corequisite math support courses on campus in Austin, TX. This entails following a common syllabus, utilizing online homework (MyOpenMath, MyMathLab, or ALEKS) and learning management systems (Canvas), holding at least one on-campus office hour per week per section, and keeping in contact with the course coordinator, primarily by email, for common assignments and exams. Class size is generally 24-30 students; (current as of Fall 2024) per 3-credit course section.
Institutional and Departmental Information

How to Apply
Interested applicants should submit an online application at www.stedwards.applicantpro.com. All applications should include a cover letter that details interest, teaching experience, areas of disciplinary expertise, courses you are qualified for and would like to teach, and your general availability (time of day, days of the week, semester, etc). A complete application will also include a Curriculum Vitae, unofficial copies of graduate transcripts, and the contact information for three references. Applicants that do not have a Masters or Ph.D. in Mathematics must highlight 18 graduate credit hours in a graduate-level mathematics course on the graduate transcript, or indicate that they are only applying to teach corequisite math support courses. Review of applications will commence on an as-needed basis when openings arise.
